University of Sheffield drops out of the world’s top 100 universities for the first time

The University of Sheffield has plummeted to it’s lowest ever position in the QS World University Rankings, moving from 96th in 2023, to 104th in this year’s world ranking that was released today.

The university received an overall score of 59.1 out of 100 based on a number of factors such as academic reputation, employment outcomes and sustainability.

This year is the second year that institutions have been judged on sustainability, with the University of Sheffield being ranked 24th in that category in today’s rankings, rocketing up from 116th in 2023.

In terms of subject rankings, the picture has been mixed in 2024 for the university, having fallen almost 20 places to 71st in mechanical engineering, but having risen for the third year running in archaeology grabbing the 21st spot for that subject.

When the rankings began in 2012, the university was placed 66th in the world, and hasn’t surpassed that ranking since.

In fact, the University of Sheffield has steadily fallen down the leaderboard, falling in all but three of the 12 years the rankings have been published.
