Leeds student making desperate plea to communities to help those caught in Sudan conflict
Osman Ali’s family are trying to cross Sudan’s border into Egypt
A Leeds student is making a desperate plea to communities to help those caught up in the conflict in Sudan.
Osman Ali, a University of Leeds student, has spoken out about the desperate attempts he and other students are making to get in touch with their families amidst Sudan’s intensifying crisis.
Osman, who is president of the University of Leeds’ Sudanese Society, told Rayo about his family’s struggle: “My family are attempting to cross the border into Egypt to escape the conflict in Sudan”.
He continued: “The trip is over 30 hours by bus and it’s really dangerous and the internet has now been cut off so I can’t even get in contact with them”.
In Sudan, thousands of families are being forced to leave their homes, including Osman’s family.
The conflict in Sudan is ongoing due to military forces wanting to acquire governmental power. Civilians have been embroiled in the violence, with reports of casualties, displacement, looting and bombing.
Osman, along with the Sudanese Society, has raised over £3,000 so far via GoFundMe. Speaking about the money raised, he said: “These funds will be allocated towards medical aid”.
Duha Hamdalla, who is also a member of the Sudanese society, added that the funds are going to the Sudanese Doctors’ Trade Union and the International Hospital located at the capital of Sudan, Khartoum Bahri.
The money will support hospitals running low on oxygen and water supplies.
Efforts made by the Sudanese society are part of a broader project in the UK by its Sudanese community, which aims to provide necessary aid to individuals affected by the war. The aid consists of food banks and essential medical care.

The GoFundMe page says: “Our coalition of UK-based Sudanese societies and universities has united to coordinate an agile aid response. We’re dedicated to providing critical and lifesaving aid for war-affected communities in Sudan.”
