No livestream, no courtroom cameras: Here’s why you won’t see a second of the Diddy trial on TV

It’s not just a courtroom decision

Sean “Diddy” Combs, the music mogul once known for dominating charts and red carpets, is now at the centre of a major federal trial in New York. He is facing charges that include sex trafficking, racketeering, and transporting individuals for prostitution. The case has generated significant public interest, with many eagerly awaiting each development. As one of the highest-profile trials in recent years, it’s attracted global attention. However, unlike other high-profile trials, such as those involving Johnny Depp or Alex Murdaugh, this one won’t be televised, broadcast, or available to livestream in any form.

So, why can’t you watch the Diddy trial on livestream?

The simple reason is that Diddy is facing federal criminal charges, and in the U.S., cameras are strictly banned from federal courtrooms. This ban is governed by Federal Rule of Criminal Procedure 53, a law that’s been in place since 1946. It prohibits all forms of broadcasting and photography inside federal criminal trials. This means no Court TV coverage, no YouTube streams, no video snippets, nothing. The same rule applied to R. Kelly’s federal trial, keeping his proceedings off television as well.

In addition to the camera ban, several witnesses in the Combs case are set to testify under pseudonyms. This measure is designed to protect their identities and ensure their safety. The sensitive nature of the case has prompted the court to take extra steps to maintain privacy. This trial is expected to involve disturbing details. Which makes it even more crucial to keep the process as secure and confidential as possible.

While some state-level trials allow cameras at the judge’s discretion, as seen with the Depp-Heard defamation case and Murdaugh’s murder trial, federal court remains completely off-limits to livestreams and broadcasts. That’s why the Diddy trial won’t be available to livestream.
