Here’s why survivors of the University of Idaho murders waited eight hours before calling 911
‘Something’s happened in our house and we don’t know what’
Last week, a hearing in the US exposed new details about the University of Idaho murders of 2022 and the survivors of Bryan Kohberger’s alleged massacre that claimed the lives of four people.
Ahead of Bryan Kohberger’s upcoming murder trial in August, Judge Steven Hippler heard arguments about what should and should not be entered into evidence last week. According to CNN, issues at the heart of Wednesday’s hearing included his Amazon purchase history, his recent diagnosis of autism spectrum disorder, alternate suspects, and whether or not the death penalty should be on the table. The judge is expected to release his decisions in writing before the pretrial hearing on May 15.
During the eight-hour hearing, Judge Steven Hippler revealed the devastating timeline of the Idaho murders and why the survivors waited so long to call the authorities. Their names have been changed to their initials to maintain anonymity.

On November 13, 2022, surviving student DM “heard strange noises and crying” at 4 am as she opened her bedroom door to see “a man dressed in black with a ski mask on walking by her bedroom door.” DM phoned her friend BF, who was just as “freaked out”, so she ran to her room where they locked themselves inside. On the way, DM noticed one of the victims, Xana Kernodle, “lying on the floor” but assumed she was drunk and unconscious.

The hearing showcased the many messages DM and BF sent out as they attempted to make sense of the evening, but they waited a full eight hours before phoning 911, the court heard. DM texted one of the victims, Kaylee Goncalves, “Pls answer”, and another victim, Madison Mogen, “R u up?”

A short while later, a friend of DM’s came round with her boyfriend at her request, where they found Xana Kernodle still lying on her bedroom floor.
“I just started bawling because I thought she had just like — I don’t even know, I thought maybe she was still just drunk and all asleep on the floor,” the court heard, according to DM’s grand jury testimony.
The boyfriend of DM’s friend investigated further, and upon returning to the scared friends, “told them to call 911.” BF was the one to call 911 at 11:56 am, telling the police, “something is happening. Something’s happened in our house and we don’t know what.”
