Former roommate of the murdered Idaho Uni students reveals heartbreaking final texts
‘I just knew something was wrong’
On 13th November 2022, four University of Idaho students were sadly stabbed to death in a student house. Bryan Kohberger is awaiting trial for their murders and pleading not guilty. A former roommate of the murdered University of Idaho students has spoken out about their tragic deaths.
Ashlin Couch lived in the student house where Ethan Chapin, Kaylee Goncalves, Xana Kernodle and Madison Mogen were killed. She left the house in the summer of 2022 after graduating, but stayed close friends with the group, particularly Madison (who she called Maddie). Xana moved into Ashlin’s old room. Maddie and Xana were found dead in Ashlin’s old bedroom.
Ashlin spoke on Good Morning America about the day she found out her friends had been killed. She received a text alert from the University of Idaho about a suspected homicide on King Road.
She said: “I texted our group of friends and I said, ‘Has anyone heard from Maddie?’ And I remember my last text message to her was, ‘Are you okay?’ And I feel like, right then and there, I just knew something was wrong.”

Ashlin continued: “It crosses my mind more that that could have happened while I was there. You never know how long someone is watching your house.
“I couldn’t even walk to my car in the dark for months after it happened.”
Ashlin and her mother started a charity called the Made With Kindness Foundation in memory of her friends. The organisation funds scholarships for students.
The house on King Road was demolished in December 2023.
