Plans for a mural to replace graffiti-tagged wall in Monkgate
Plans have been submitted to replace a graffitied wall in Monkgate with a commissioned mural
The wall of the 19th century building 54 Monkgate, which faces Agar Street, has had graffiti since 2009. New plans set out how the graffiti will now be replaced with artwork.
The artwork will feature imagery inspired by the history of the surrounding area, including Grey Coat School and Monkgate and Jersey Dairy Company.
The application stated that a high-quality mural would attract less graffiti than the blank rendering applied in recent years.

York Civic Trust, the local Business Improvement District, ward councillors and York St John University have all aided in the development of the plans.
According to the Local Democracy Reporting Service, the design for the mural features the silhouette of a young girl carrying books. However, plans stated the details of the design were not final.
BBC News reports that the plans said: “The mural is intended to contribute positively to the experience of Agar Street by replacing recurrent graffiti tags with a coherent, community-informed artwork.”
“Murals can provide placemaking and communal value where quality, location and local narrative re carefully considered.”
The plans follow the unveiling of a mural earlier this month which depicted a fox wearing a flat cap with a jar of Bile Beans.
In June, paintings on utility boxes which were designed by children were unveiled across the Holgate area in a separate project.
