Trump suspended aid and gave an ultimatum to Zelenskyy, but what does that actually mean?

Ukraine will no longer receive arms from the US

Donald Trump decided to suspend all military aid and gave an ultimatum to Ukraine after that viral meeting with President Volodymyr Zelenskyy on Friday. The entire world must have seen that tense meeting last week which actually sent shivers down my spine.

What does the suspension of military aid mean for Ukraine?

The suspension of US military aid means that Ukraine will no longer receive any military support from the US. This could include weaponry, soldiers, money and medical equipment.

Why has Trump suspended military aid?

In the tense meeting on Friday, Trump told Zelenskyy he should be more “grateful” for the US support Ukraine had received during the war. However, after a meeting between Trump and his senior advisors on Monday 3rd March, the US government decided to stop any aid so they could discuss its future.

The televised meeting between Trump and Zelenskyy is said to be the catalyst for the decision. The meeting resulted in an argument between them both, and Trump accused Zelenskyy of “gambling with World War Three.” He even went as far as to call him a “scumbag.”

How long will the suspension last?

A White House official anonymously told Sky News: “President [Trump] has been clear that he is focused on peace.

“We need our partners to be committed to that goal as well. We are pausing and reviewing our aid to ensure that is contributing to a solution.”

Zelenskyy hasn’t responded to the suspension, and it has no set length put in place. So, we’re not sure how long it will be – probably until the two can come to another decision.

Speaking on Truth Social, his own social media platform, Trump said: “America will not put up with it for much longer!”

“It is what I was saying, this guy [Zelenskyy] doesn’t want there to be peace as long as he has America’s backing,” he claimed.

Another White House official stated Fox News: “This is not permanent termination of aid, it’s a pause. The orders are going out right now.”

How much had the US previously sent to Ukraine?

The New York Times previously reported that over $1 billion in arms and ammunition would be withheld by the US, with Ukraine now made to work with private contractors instead.

The Biden administration sent Ukraine over $66.5 billion in military aid since the war began, and left $3.85 billion as a spare that could be used to send more weapons if needed.
