Cassandra: Explaining the bizarre plot twist ending of the wild Netflix show
It’s like Black Mirror to the 1000th degree
Cassandra is one of the most jarring Netflix thrillers I’ve ever seen and is up there with the freakiest Black Mirror episodes. The German series is filled to the brim with plot twists and random turns that you’d never expect. It’s all about AI, and what could freak you out more than a technology gone wrong show? Not much, let’s be real. Here’s an explanation of the wild plot twist ending of Cassandra.
In the show, a family move into an early smart home, which was designed back in the 1970s. They are the first residents since the previous owners *mysteriously* died.
What we don’t find out initially but soon learn is that there are actually two different stories going on. There’s the present day plotline which focuses around Samira and her family dealing with Cassandra, the AI on the monitors and as a human-like robot on wheels. Then, there’s a storyline set in 1972, detailing the lives of the first homeowners who died… and just how they did.
The truth about Cassandra’s family

The show reveals the true fate of Cassandra. While she was pregnant with her second child, her husband Horst convinced her to use a new invention involving radiation to see if their baby would be a boy or girl. However, it resulted in the child’s premature death and Cassandra got incurable cancer.
Her husband had another terrible idea that she should put her consciousness into a computer, so she can stay with them for longer. However, that machinery is tied to the house, so the AI assistant isn’t actually AI at all – it’s the real Cassandra’s brain. WHAT?!!

When Horst tries to switch her off, it soon becomes clear that she cannot be turned off by her own request. In the present day, Cassandra was accused of murdering her family but we soon find out that her son trying to get out of a moving car that resulted in the crash that killed them all. Watching her son die caused a power outage and she ended up losing power.
Explaining the confusing ending

via Netflix
If you made it to the ending, you might be confused about Cassandra, Samira and David. After Samira found Cassandra’s daughter’s room, with her body inside, Cassandra stabs her. Then we go back in time once more and learn that Horst actually wanted to take her daughter away to his new family.
Cassandra is convinced to let Samira live, but narrowly escapes death when Cassandra turns on the house gas and it goes up in flames. The final image of a ghostly version of her with her daughter in their bedroom appears.
Is Cassandra really dead? It’s a huge loose end that the story doesn’t clear up. They leave the confines of her secret bedroom, which could only mean they are both in fact dead.
However, one huge plot hole actually happens in episode one: We see Birgit and baby Thomas survive the crash, but their fate is never shown. I need answers, stat!
