What are Edinburgh students’ fashion trend predictions for 2025?

We scoured the streets of Edinburgh for your hot takes on fashion for the upcoming year

With the rise of the internet, the days of predicting when a fashion trend would repeat using the ’20-year rule’ are gone. Now, microtrends, which last weeks, mean knowing what to wear has become harder and harder. We asked Edinburgh students to be a guiding light through this confusion and give us their trend predictions for 2025 – read their answers below.

Jewellery, and a LOT of it

After the era of obnoxious statement necklaces in the early 2010s – think Zoella or MyLifeAsEva – it’s no wonder accessories veered away from being so bold for a while. Let’s call it a recovery period. Yet a decade later, you’re saying maximalist jewellery is back, perhaps in a classier, more effortless way. This stylish diva below had wrists stacked with bangles and bracelets.

If you’re stuck for Edinburgh shopping options, she said she got everything from small business Recreation Jewels, holding a Valentine’s themed pop-up on Thistle Street between 8th and 16th February. In terms of the jewellery style, beads were another trend you mentioned.

Fur

We can all agree that fur has never truly gone out of style, especially in a city as cold as Edinburgh – everyone and their mother has owned a coat with a fur hood at some point. But this year, you’re saying fur is back: we’re talking huge hats and coats that touch the floor. Gone are the days when the fur coat was a Pollock girly exclusive, so could this be the perfect option for your winter-summer transition jacket? You also stressed the importance of faux fur and vintage options as an ethical way of engaging in this trend.

Bright colours

With the birth of ‘greige’, most high-street stores lack clothes in any colour you could call interesting. You might get a dark green, blue, or the occasional red, but your options are limited.

It’s no surprise the colourfully dressed group of friends below is asking for more exploration of the colour wheel amongst Edinburgh students this year. Personally, one of my New Year’s resolutions is to try pink.

Skinny jeans, unfortunately

Don’t worry, we’re also shuddering at the thought. Despite our efforts over the last decade to cut all ties with the skinny jean, you’re warning us that models and influencers like Bella Hadid and Alix Earle are trying to bring back the trend in 2025.

The silver lining is, as far as we can see, the skinny jean is currently being styled with a knee-high boot in a Tori-Vega-esque way. So, if the return of the skinny jean means covering half of it with a tall boot, how long will they survive?

Dresses over jeans

This 2000s red carpet staple has long been the subject of internet memes and mockery, with millennials across the globe cringing at the thought. However, you’re calling for the return of the controversial dress-jean combo, stressing that it works “if done correctly”.

This diva isn’t quite rocking the style as boldly as Ashley Tisdale’s iconic looks from her time on Disney Channel, but we like the modern take on the trend using a longline top.

It’s safe to say that your predictions for upcoming fashion trends this year are controversial and varied. We’ll definitely be watching across the university campuses to see if any of these trends take off. Hopefully, it isn’t skinny jeans.
