Explaining the drama around Lily Collins’s surrogacy: Why is she getting dragged?

Her husband had a scathing response to ‘hateful’ comments

The internet is currently up in arms about Lily Collins‘s surrogacy, so here’s a simple rundown explaining why she is getting backlash for it. Lily just announced the birth of their new daughter, Tove Jane McDowell, last Friday on her Instagram. In the caption, Lily and Charlie shared their “endless gratitude for our incredible surrogate,” and posted an adorable photo of their new baby in a cute outfit.

However, since making the post, Lily and her husband have been at the centre of a lot of backlash regarding her surrogacy, and many have accused her of being part of an “unethical trend” of using a surrogate.

Many of the comments on the post were criticising their decision to use a surrogate, with one user writing “having babies shouldn’t be like placing an order on Amazon.”

Another said: “Wow. Money can buy you literally anything, including human life.”

The going rate for surrogacy in America can be anywhere between £80,000 to £100,000 which is out of reach for most regular women in 2025 and is one of the main reasons people have criticised Lily for this decision.

Lily has previously opened up about teenage health struggles

In her 2017 memoir, Unfiltered: No Shame, No Regrets, Just Me, she opened up about suffering from bulimia that caused her menstrual cycle to stop. “I was terrified I had ruined my chances of having kids,” she explained in the book. The truth is, it’s none of our business to know why she opted for surrogacy and we won’t know unless she addresses it publicly.

New dad Charlie had obviously seen the negative comments and posted one of his own regarding the situation. He first thanked the supportive people, and then addressed those who were “not an expert” on surrogacy.

“It’s ok to not know the motivations of a surrogate regardless of what you assume. And it’s ok to spend less time spewing hateful words into the world, especially in regards to a beautiful baby girl who was brought a lot of love into people’s lives,” Charlie wrote.
