Aberystwyth University recognises staff and students for their Welsh language contribution

The awards celebrate their dedication to promoting and preserving the Welsh language


Aberystwyth University has recognised its staff and students for their contribution to the Welsh language.

The institution gave accolades to five individuals for their contributions to promoting and supporting the Welsh language at the annual Welsh Language Awards ceremony, on December 4th.

The awards celebrate students and staff nominated by their peers for their dedication to fostering the use of Welsh across the University community. 

This year’s winners, as nominated by the university’s staff and students, include Vicki Jones, who was named Exceptional Learner (Staff), Dr Hanna Binks and Dr Lloyd Roderick who jointly received the Promoting Welsh in the Workplace award and Ellie Norris, who was awarded the Studying Through The Medium of Welsh award.

Celyn Bennett was also honoured by the university as the Welsh Language Champion (Student) and the Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences Team won an award for Supporting Welsh in the Workplace.

In addition to these accolades, Elain Gwynedd, Welsh Culture Officer and UMCA President received the panel’s Special Award for her significant contributions to the Welsh language and culture at the university.

The winners all received a personalised englyn, a traditional Welsh poetic form, crafted by university staff, including Professor Mererid Hopwood, Dr Eurig Salisbury, a lecturer from the Department of Welsh and Celtic Studies, or Dr Hywel Griffiths, Reader at the Department of Geography and Earth Sciences.

Speaking with Cambrian News, Dr Gwawr Taylor, University Secretary and Director of Welsh Language, said“Today we celebrate the outstanding contribution of individuals who have been learning and promoting Welsh at the University.

“Their dedication and passion motivates and inspires staff and students across the University community. Thank you all for your tireless work and commitment to the Welsh language.”

The ceremony also highlighted additional efforts within the University, awarding Certificates of Special Recognition to students James Fennell, Department of Welsh and Celtic Studies, and Cai Phillips, Department of Theatre, Film & Television Studies and International Politics.

This certificate was also awarded to staff members, Philip Bowling, Academic Registry, and Sharon King, School of Veterinary Science.

Established to champion the Welsh language in higher education, Aberystwyth University’s Welsh Language Awards showcase the institution’s ongoing commitment to celebrating and supporting Welsh language and culture, both within the University and beyond.
