Inside Netflix’s iconic Squid Game rave, which wasn’t the total cringe-fest I expected

Netflix threw a massive rave in London and it was actually good

To celebrate the launch of the second season of Squid Game on December 26, Netflix hosted a rave in London this week, and I had to see what it was like.

The event was held at Drumsheds, an old IKEA in Tottenham, London which shut down and got turned into a massive 15,000 capacity warehouse nightclub.

They kept things pretty vague, only promising it would consist of “live DJs, Korean food and plenty of Squid Game fun” and announcing techno icon Peggy Gou as the headliner.

The huge DJ is from South Korea, where Squid Game is set, so it was literally a match made in heaven, but I thought the Squid Game aspect might be a little cringe.

I was pleasantly surprised as the whole event was actually a really cool concept, not the huge cringe-fest I was so scared it might be.

As soon as you got off the train, you were greeted by the famous red Squid Game guards outside the station, who stood creepily still just as they do in the Netflix series.

The guards, in their full red suits and black masks, continued to line the street right up until you got into the venue, and there were even more once you got inside.

Squid Game’s eerie theme tune played throughout the warehouse, which was lit with dim purple and blue lights, and there were all kinds of cool photo opportunities.

Half of the main room was split into a food area which was made to look like a real South Korean street, lined with authentic food stalls including Korean dumplings and corn dogs.

The walls were complete with Korean posters and the food was even themed around Squid Game, with burger names like Player 456.

All the time, the red guards were creepily walking around, almost making you jump every time they appeared out of absolutely nowhere.

Oh, and there was an animatronic recreation of the famous Red Light Green Light doll whose eyes actually lit up red and head really did turn around.

In front of the food area was the main stage, where Yu Su and Mogwaa warmed up before Peggy Gou performed an incredible DJ set. All the time, Squid Game graphics were playing on the screen.

Even the VIP area was cleverly designed to look like the grand dinner party where all the main people behind the Squid Game gather in the series, with huge chandeliers hanging from the ceiling.

Overall, it was actually a really great evening and it’s got me excited for the new season coming on Boxing Day.

It’s set three years after the first instalment, when the previous winner Player 456 is determined to find the people behind the game and put an end to the vicious sport.
