Tributes pour in for former Newcastle student who died from suspected poisoning in Laos
‘Simone was one of a kind and had the most wonderful energy and spark for life’
The parents of Simone White, a 28-year-old former Newcastle University student, have released a statement following her death in Laos.
Simone was one of six people to die after allegedly consuming alcoholic drinks contaminated with methanol.
Tributes have poured in from friends and family of Simone, who have described feeling “devastated” by her death, Chronicle Live reports.
Originally from Orpington, Kent, Simone studied law at Newcastle University and was traveling in the backpacking hotspot of Vang Vieng, Laos when she died.
In a heartfelt tribute, her parents said: “We are devastated by the loss of our beautiful, kind and loving daughter Simone.
“Simone was one of a kind and had the most wonderful energy and spark for life. She was a soul who gave so much to so many and was loved by her family, friends and colleagues.
“Simone has been taken from us too soon, she will be sorely missed by her brother, grandmother and entire family. Our hearts go out to all other families who have been affected by this terrible tragedy.”
Simone worked as an associate lawyer for Squire Patton Boggs after completing her degree in law with European legal studies at Newcastle University. The firm also paid tribute to her in a statement: “It is with deep sadness that we mourn the tragic passing of our dear friend and colleague Simone White. Simone was a talented colleague with a bright future ahead of her and someone who epitomised our Firm values.
“Our thoughts go out to all of Simone’s family, friends, and those colleagues and clients who had the privilege to work with and know Simone. She will be sincerely missed.”

The statement was posted on LinkedIn and one of Simone’s colleagues commented: “Simone was one of the kindest, most genuine and thoughtful people I have ever met. She lived life to the fullest and encouraged everyone around her to do the same.”
Laos officials have only released minimal details about the incident and no formal charges have yet been made. However, the Vang Vieng Tourism Police confirmed that “a number of people” have been held as part of the investigation.
Laos government has launched an investigation into the deaths, as at least 11 more victims were admitted in hospital after falling ill.
