November is upon us. Heating bills are rising, assignments are due, seasonal depression is kicking in, and everyone’s in that seasonal limbo, debating whether to rock up to lectures sweating in a jacket or just risk getting hypothermia.

Have no fear, we’ve got a list of 15 exciting events happening in Newcastle this November! Not feeling festive? Have a peek at some of the christmassy activities available near you to commence the merriment. From wholesome markets to boozy live music, we’ve got you covered. Grab yourself a winter boo, and make the most of the Toon this month!

Skating at the Life Science Centre

Date and Time: 9:30 – 20:30, 9th Nov – 5th Jan

Prices:

  • 18 and over – £15
  • £13.50  – children 10+
  • £11.50 – children nine and under
  • £46 – family of four, maximum 2 adults
  • FREE – carers, please bring proof

Location: Times Square, just outside of the Life Science Centre

Key info: An open air rink that runs throughout the Christmas season. All skating abilities welcome. Slots are around one hour (from the moment you get your skates).

Thrifty Chef Meals on campus 

Date and time: 14:00-17:00, 11th, 18th and 25th November

Price: £3 meal kit (makes two meals)

Location: Outside the Newcastle University Students’ Union

Key Info: This student-led project aims to reduce food waste and teach cooking skills. They collect leftover food from Grainger Market and generate recipes and meal boxes out of the ingredients it gathers.

Christmas Light Switch On

Date and time: 16:00-17:00, 12th November 

Price: FREE

Location: The area around Monument 

Key info: Newcastle City Council is working with breakfast show presenters of Hits Radio North East, Steve and Karen. This event will feature live music and games will commence.

Jesmond Food Market

Date and time: 10:00-15:00, 16th November 

Price: FREE to enter, prices of the products vary

Location: Jesmond Dene Armstrong Bridge, Newcastle Upon Tyne, NE7 7

Key info: This event, brought to Newcastle by Jesmond Food Market, is a friendly neighbourhood market showcasing the local produce from the North East. The stalls offer a range of food and drinks, and some trusty trinkets. These markets commence every first and third week of the month.

Christmas Markets

Location: The area around Monument on Grey Street & Grainger Street

Key info: Operated by the local company EVNT Inspirations, the 2024 Newcastle Christmas Markets feature “igloo pods raised above the stalls offering customers food and drink in a warm and cosy environment with views down the iconic Grey Street and surrounding areas”; Santa’s stories tepee where children can meet Santa and his elves; ten-meter Christmas tree; “festive films, character appearances and craft activities” and a traditional carousel.

MoRunning 

Date and time: race starts at 10:00, 16th November

Price: FREE to watch

Location: Exhibition Park, Claremont Road, Newcastle Upon Tyne, NE2 4PZ

Key info: MoRunning is raising money for November this year by hosting a charity run in Newcastle. Movember raises money for men’s mental health and suicide prevention, as well as prostate and testicular cancer. Come along and watch to support your fellow runners run laps of Exhibition Park. Entries to apply to run closed on 9th November.

Fight Club

Date and time: Evening of 18th & 21st November

Price: £35 to watch

Location: The Fed, Newcastle’s leading purpose built boxing arena

Key info: This Student Charity Boxing Event is run by Stage One Events. Students sign up to a free six-week crash course where they undergo boxing training. Each person gets paired with an opponent within the same weight category, and they undertake a professional fight in a boxing ring in front of their peers. The event is raising money for Cancer Research UK. The theme for audience members is black tie.

HotPod Yoga

Date and time: 13:00, 17th November

Price: £5 

Location: The Northumberland Club, N Jesmond Ave, Jesmond, Newcastle upon Tyne NE2 3JU

Key info: in a room that’s heated to 37 degrees, “the Hotpod teacher will personally guide you through a flow of postures that will work with your body, open your heart, and calm your mind.”

Bring along a yoga mat, a large towel and a bottle of water. Meet the Sports Assistants outside of Newcastle University Students’ Union main entrance (opposite the Northern Stage) at 12pm, and you’ll travel to the event together.

Life Drawing at Cobalt Studios

Date and time: 18:30, 20th & 27th November

Price: £9

Location: Venue Space, Cobalt Studios, 10-16 Boyd Street, Newcastle upon Tyne, NE2 1AP

Key info: This is an unguided life drawing session with colourful lights, calming music and a fully licensed bar & hot drinks. You need to bring along pens/chalk/pencils.

Vintage Vera

Date and time: 10:00, 22nd November

Price: FREE entry, prices of the products vary

Location: Floor Two in the Newcastle University Students’ Union

Key info: A sustainable fashion sale is coming to campus. All the vintage clothes are Grade A and come from the United States of America. also, you don’t have to buy a kilo! There’s no minimum or maximum spend. You weigh the clothes you want to buy, and the price depends on the weight of the items.

Northern lights

Date and time: timings vary, 22nd November – 31st December

Prices:

Location: Leazes park, Richardson Road, Newcastle upon Tyne, NE2 4BJ

Key info: This “enchanting after-dark attraction will fill the park with immersive visuals, original audio and jaw-dropping illuminations.” The experience also includes features such as a Christmas village & vintage fairground rides.

NUBS X Movember charity Netball Match

Date & Time: 13:00-17:00, 23rd November 

Prices:

  • £20 for each team to play
  • £3 to come and watch the tournament

Key Info: Newcastle University Business Society (NUBS) netball team are organising a pool style charity netball tournament to raise money for Movember. Teams involved: NUBS Netball, Munters Netball, Armstrong Netball, Medics Netball, Engines Rugby, Jesmond TuTu FC, Medics Rugby, MechEng FC.

Fight Night

Date & Time: 18:30-23:00, 26th & 28th November

Price: £13.90 – £19.90

Location: Newcastle University Students’ Union

Key Info: Both Newcastle and Northumbria students can sign up to this Official Student Boxing Event to be involved in a free eight-week training camp in Central Jesmond Gym (with ex-commonwealth pro boxer Andrew McLean). Fighters can raise money for their chosen charity if they wish.

Reformer Pilates

Date and time: 16:00, 27th November

Location: Gosforth Springs Studio, 117 High Street, Gosforth, NE3 1HA

Key info: A Pilates instructor will guide you through the class, as you navigate a Pilates reformer (an exercise equipment with adjustable beds, sliding carriages, ropes & pulleys) – encouraging joint stability, muscle strength & balance. The class welcomes a mixture of abilities, so don’t let the technical terms scare you! You’ll also be given a free pair of grippy socks. Please wear leisure wear. Meet the Sports Assistants at 3:15pm outside the Students Union Reception, City Campus (outside Northern Stage). Together, you will get the bus.

Live Music at NX – Skream: Open To Close
