Cambridge revealed to be top UK university for employability

The University of Cambridge has been ranked fifth globally, making it the best in the UK

The University of Cambridge is the top UK university for employability according to The Times Higher Education (THE) Global Employability Ranking.

The university has come in fifth place globally, down by one position from last year.

The ranking is measured by an independent survey with the results based on direct employer assessments. They assess universities based on their graduates’ employability and how prepared they are for the working world.

Produced by data from Emerging, a French consultancy, the Global Employability University Ranking and Survey (GEURS) is the only ranking and survey to reveal the world’s top 250 universities for producing employable graduates.

Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) has claimed the top position, with the California Institute of Technology and Stanford University coming in second and third respectively.

Harvard University has gained the fourth spot, overtaking Cambridge from last year.

Cambridge outperforms rivals Oxford again this year which claimed seventh place, up one from the 2024 ranking.

Ten of the top 20 places on the list are held by US and UK universities. 13 UK institutions feature on the list overall, including Imperial College London and the London School of Economics and Political Science (LSE).

Data continues to show that graduates who have completed some form of work experience are highly sought after upon graduation, becoming an “exceptionally influential” factor in employer evaluations.

The survey additionally revealed that 45.9 per cent of employers value the ability to learn and adapt to new technologies and trends, while 45.1 per cent prioritise collaboration skills, such as teamwork and communication.

Emerging’s managing partner, Sandrine Belloc said that students are now being better equipped “with essential skills for today’s dynamic workforce”. Reflecting on the 2025 results, she said that “the mounting global emphasis on employability is driving a transformative shift” in universities.

This result follows Cambridge ranking fifth once again in the The Times World University Rankings 2025 and fourth in the UK ranking, placing below Oxford in both.
