LJMU receives gold award for supporting Liverpool’s Armed Forces community

The achievement celebrates John Moores’ forces-friendly credentials

Liverpool John Moores University have been presented with a Merseyside Gold Award this week, celebrating its commitment to supporting the Armed Forces community in Liverpool.

The award recognises LJMU’s efforts to support for the Armed Forces community since signing the Armed Forces Covenant in 2021.

It also acknowledges how the university proactively demonstrates its forces-friendly credentials as part of its recruitment and selection processes, as well as its ongoing support for reservists and cadet force volunteers.

This achievement was announced in the wake of Remembrance Day on 11th November, and only three months after the university gained gold status through the Ministry of Defence Employer Recognition Scheme – the highest award available to an organisation or institution.

The university received their award alongside various other North West based organisations and businesses in recognition of their pledges to assist and support members of the Armed Forces in the UK.

LJMU vice-chancellor, Professor Mark Power, collected the award alongside the university’s Armed Forces Champion, Dr Gus Ryrie.

Guest speakers at the awards ceremony, which was hosted at Liverpool’s renowned Liver Building, included the Lord Lieutenant of Merseyside, Mr Mark Blundell, and the Principal MoD guest was Commodore Tom Knowles RN ADC, Commander Naval Regional Headquarters North.

In a statement shared by Liverpool John Moores University, vice-chancellor Mark Power expressed his recognition for the wider Armed Forces Steering Group for contributing to the award, as a result of the collaborative work done between themselves and the university.

LJMU’s inclusive efforts to tailor their student and staff experiences to become “forces-friendly” contribute towards their aim of creating positive change for the community across the UK.
