University of Glasgow to hold vigil for peace regarding situation in Israel and Gaza

The university has encouraged people to attend next Monday

The University of Glasgow has announced plans to hold a vigil for peace for Israel and Gaza next week.

The event is set to take place in the university memorial chapel between 4pm and 6pm on Monday 23rd October.

The university’s Internal Communications has encouraged all members of the university community to attend. They have said that the vigil will be a chance for everyone to “gather in silence” and “reflect, lament and pray”.

The email comes after a series of events which have taken place at the university. Over the last week, the GU Conservatives and Unionists society wrote an open letter to the university, requesting for the main building to be lit in Israeli colours.

Following this, the Glasgow Socialist Workers Party organised a walk out for Palestine which began at the Glasgow University Main Gates on Tuesday 17th October.

There is undoubtedly an air of unrest between both pro-Israelis and pro-Palestinians across the globe. The university’s vigil appears to be aiming to bring both communities together in an anti-political way, and to mourn the deaths of innocent civilians.
