Volleyball Remain Unbeaten After Big Match

Loughborough Students Volleyball Club maintained their unbeaten start to the BUCS campaign with a hard fought

Loughborough Students Volleyball Club maintained their unbeaten start to the BUCS campaign with a hard fought victory over an experienced Cambridge side in front of a vocal home crowd in The David Wallace Sports Hall on Wednesday night.

The home side dominated the opening exchanges of the first set and found themselves with a three point advantage early on thanks to an ace each from Jakub Lang and Matthew Ngo, whilst Karl Chong took to control of the battle at the net.

However, Cambridge rallied and snatched a keenly contested first set 25-23 to pile the pressure on Guy Banwell and his team.

The game then erupted into life as Cambridge seized the initiative; a 13 possession rally going the way of the visitors and despite Loughborough’s best efforts they could not gain a foothold.

The second set saw some extremely high quality play with both sides keeping the ball alive – but at every key point it seemed Cambridge had the final say. They led by five points at one stage and seemed to be pulling away to silence the home fans.

The home side were stung into action and six unanswered points brought them right back into the game, Ollie Evans providing deft touches for two winners and Ivan Vatas’ powerful blocking denied Cambridge any reprieve.

The set was tied at 25 apiece before captain Banwell delivered a crushing blow to give Loughborough the slimmest of advantages, and when a Cambridge player hit long in the next play the game was tied at one set all.

The third set belonged to Banwell as Cambridge could not handle the pace, power and accuracy of the Loughborough game. Time and again the ball was set for the captain and he delivered five untouched winners to sustain his side’s advantage; it was left for number two Karl Chong to deliver a final blow to seal the set.

Loughborough then turned on the after burners to pull away from their opponents; Ivan Vatas continued to serve strongly and the home side showed their strength in depth as fresh legs from the bench kept up the intensity. They won the fourth set 25–18 to complete the victory and show why they are a force to be reckoned with in this year’s competition.

Captain Banwell spoke to The Epinal after the match admitting:

“We were expecting a good scrap and we certainly got one, we had to up our game after going one set down but we know we have the players to hit the big shots at the right time”.
