11-year-old boy taken to hospital after being hit by police van near Lancaster Lidl
Owen Road, close to the supermarket, will remain closed “for some time”
Ariana KubiakAn 11-year-old boy has been hit by a police van when crossing Owen Road.
He was been taken to the Royal Lancaster Infirmary in “critical condition”, and has since been transferred to Alder Hey Children’s Hospital in Liverpool, reports BBC News Lancashire.
Owen Road, which leads into the city centre, has since been closed, following the collapse of a traffic light which resulted from the crash.
The collision happened at 8.30pm on Thursday 25th May, after Lancaster Police followed an emergency call.
It is reported that the police van “had activated the emergency equipment, lights and sirens”.
A spokesperson for the Independent Office for Police Conduct (IOPC) stated, “a marked police van, with its lights and sirens on, was in a collision with an 11-year-old boy”.
Chief Supt Karen Edwards told BBC News: “I appreciate there will be lots of questions about what has happened and why, and I want to reassure you that a full and thorough investigation will be carried out to establish the circumstances.
“I want to take this opportunity to thank the local community for their understanding and support during what was clearly a hugely distressing incident.”
The Independent Office for Police Conduct (IOPC) stated that it was notified of the collision promptly and an investigation is underway. Catherine Bates, IOPC Regional Director, continued: “This is an incredibly tragic incident and my thoughts are with the boy, his family and all those affected.
“Our investigation will thoroughly examine the circumstances prior to the collision, including whether appropriate policies and procedures were followed.”
Investigations are being held as to the true account of the collision, and police are appealing for witnesses to provide more information by calling 101 and quoting log 1388 of May 25.
