Florence Pugh revealed that the Oppenheimer set was hit with technical difficulties during the sex scene she did with Cillian Murphy while they were totally naked.

Sex scenes have been a point of discussion in recent years due to the Me Too movement. Following the outpouring of stories from actresses across the industry, advancements have been made to make quite a vulnerable moment more professionally minded. However, no matter how many intimacy coordinators you hire, there will still be issues, namely tech ones.

Florence recently shone a light on one of these moments while detailing how the camera broke during the filming of one of the movie’s most-talked-about moments.

The revelation came while she was on a panel for Universal with her scene partner, Cillian, and his on-screen wife, Emily Blunt, moderated by Jamie Dornan.

In the film, Florence plays Jean Tatlock, a psycharist that Cillian’s character, J. Robert Oppenheimer, has an affair with after they meet through their involvement in the Communist Party of the United States. She later died by suicide aged 29.

“In the middle of our sex scene, the camera broke. No one knows this, but it did. Our camera broke when we were both naked! And it was not ideal timing, and there weren’t many cameras,” Florence said in a video of their chat.

Florence dished how the director Christopher Nolan was hit with the double whammy of bad news when he discovered the alternative camera was not to hand.

“And one camera was in the shop being fixed, and Chris [Nolan] turned and asked someone ‘Where’s the other camera?’ The camera was in the shop — bad news for that person who gave him the news,” she said.

Despite the less-than-ideal circumstances, Florence tried to turn this actual nightmare come to life – finding yourself at work completely stark naked – into a positive by opting to make it a “moment to learn” about the many intricacies of movie-grade cameras.

“And we then had to figure out how to fix this camera. So Cillian and I are in this room together, it’s a closed set so we’re both holding our bodies, and this camera surgeon comes into the room and stars [working] on the camera and I thought ‘Well, this is my moment to learn. So, tell me, what’s wrong with this camera?’ You just make your moments,” Florence said. “And I’m like ‘What’s going on with the shutter here, buddy?’ Anyway he explains, and actually Chris comes in that it’s become the light is coming in wrong. It’s just amazing that everyone on this set was so knowledgeable and so ready to make this kind of movie that there was no dull moment.”

It all seemed to turn out even more than alright as the biopic of the physicist – who is credited with pioneering the invention of the atomic bomb – leads the nominations for the 96th Academy Awards with 13 nods. This list includes Best Picture, Best Director and Best Adapted Screenplay. Both Cillian and Emily have now become first-time nominees – Best Actor and Best Supporting Actress, respectively – for playing the titular role and his wife, Kitty Oppenheimer.
