You’ve seen it all over Twitter, but how do you actually create an AI version of yourself?

I have to admit, I’m obsessed

I’m going to take a wild guess and say your Twitter timeline has been absolutely filled with people posting Uncanny Valley AI pictures of themselves as mermaids, fairies and goddesses across the weekend (3rd December). Unlike other trends in the past, these images actually look pretty stellar, and you’d be forgiven for thinking a professional had been commissioned to draw them up for everyone.

Strangely enough, this isn’t the first time people have randomly become obsessed with posting rogue drawings of themselves all over the internet. Back in May, the “NewProfilePic” trend united standard Twitter users with middle-aged Facebook mums all over the world, by creating “painted” versions of people’s photos.

Unlike NewProfilePic, though, you can’t actually just upload your pics to a dodgy free website. So, how exactly can you create an AI version of yourself? And is the process as simple as everyone’s making it out to be?

How to create an AI version of yourself

I’m going to tell you right off the bat that you have to spend money – BIG money – if you want to create more than one AI version of yourself. The Lensa app costs £32.99 a year for full access to the majority of filters – and 50 per cent off your Magic Avatar (the photos you’ve been seeing all over Twitter and Instagram), which can cost up to £6.99.

In order to get unlimited free photos, however, here’s what you need to do:

  1. Download and open the Lensa app.
  2. Click on the “+” and allow access to your photos.
  3. Once your photo has been uploaded, click “effects” and select the “Cartoon” art style.
  4. Then, choose from a number of backgrounds to completely AI-ify yourself.
  5. The “Cartoon” filter is totally free, which means you can use it to your heart’s content.
