Martha MAFS Australia

Married at First Sight Australia’s Martha says the show was ‘traumatising’

She said she ‘regretted the entire thing’ when the show was airing

It’s no secret that some of the Married at First Sight Australia Season 6 cast are fuming with their portrayal on the show and how it’s left them feeling. Cast members are reportedly planning on suing MAFS for “psychological trauma”, and other contestants such as Sam and Lauren have insisted some of their scenes were staged by producers.

Now Martha has revealed that being on MAFS Australia was “traumatic”, and that it left her feeling like she couldn’t trust anyone.

“I think that what the contestants go through is so traumatic and polarising that afterwards they feel they can’t trust anyone”, Martha told OK! Online. “How can you trust the people who put you in that position in the first place, is usually the mentality of people coming off reality TV.”

Martha said she felt unable to speak to friends and family about how she was feeling, only trusting fellow contestants with her anxieties. Because of this, Martha felt herself drifting from those closest to her, causing feelings of isolation.

Martha told OK! Online: “I was so hyper vigilant after the show, I just couldn’t relax. At the time I didn’t want to talk to anyone about what I was feeling, apart from the other contestants, and I definitely didn’t want to speak with the psychologist on the MAFS payroll.

“You become distanced from your friends and family because it feels like no one can understand you, since they haven’t experienced it themselves, which then isolates you even more, and then it becomes a viscous cycle. It is important to have a strong support system, whatever and whoever that is.”

Martha revealed that when the show was airing for the first time she regretted going on the show, but now nearly three years on from MAFS finishing she’s changed her mind, especially as her and Michael have stayed together.

“Hindsight is a beautiful thing”, Martha said. “While the show was airing…I regretted the entire thing.”

Martha and Michael currently live together in Bondi. Martha says she describes Michael as her boyfriend rather than as her husband, “which I think is quite a cute title that I’m not mad about at all,” she said.

Unlike all the other MAFS Australia contestants, Martha and Michael and Cameron and Jules were the only two couples to stay together after the show ended. Cameron and Jules officially tied the knot, but what about Michael and Martha?

Martha told OK! Online: “I think there may be a wedding on the cards but I guess that’s a question you’ll have to ask Michael.”

Married at First Sight Australia Season 6 is available to watch on All 4 now.
