Netflix’s new Spanish film, The Platform, gives us a lot of gore, violence and death. The film has caught a lot of people’s eyes because it’s not only deeply disturbing, but it also has a crazy ending that left everyone with a lot of questions. Nevertheless, people are obsessed. If you enjoy feeling sick by disturbingly gory films, and mentally scrambled by weird, trippy storylines – here’s a list of 14 more shows that are equally as messed up as The Platform.

The Invisible Man

Cecilia, played by Handmaid’s Tale Elisabeth Moss, is the main character in this new mystery horror. Cecilia’s ex-husband stages his own suicide and then comes back to stalk and terrorize her.

Because her husband has been declared dead, the police don’t believe her story that he’s trying to kill her, so she takes matters into her own hands and fights back.

The Occupant

Another Spanish addition to Netflix. The Occupant is about an unemployed executive who is forced to sell his apartment.

He then becomes obsessed with the new family that moves into his old home. He discovers he still has the key and desperately tries to recover his old life at any cost.

The Hunt

Twelve strangers wake up in the middle of a field, with no idea of where they are or how they got there. The Hunt is about a messed up game started by a group of elitists. They gather at a remote location to hunt humans for sport. However, the main character, Crystal turns their game on its head.

You’ll recognise loads of famous people in this cast, including, Betty Gilpin, Emma Roberts, Hilary Swank, Justin Hartley and others.

Circle

This 2015 thriller is based around a game that fifty strangers are brought in to. They wake up in a circle and have to vote who gets to live and who dies. More and more people get killed off until they decide on the one person that can live.

Vivarium

A young couple, played by Imogen Poots and Jesse Eisenberg, are searching for their new home and then find themselves trapped in a labyrinth-like neighbourhood of identical houses that they can’t escape. They move in, get delivered a baby and their lives quickly unravel. It’s like a surreal nightmare and it looks terrifying.

Cube

A Sci-Fi film from the late nineties has a similar sort of theme to The Platform. A group of strangers wake up in a giant cube that’s made of multiple smaller rooms. Each person is gifted with a special skill and they have to work together to escape the maze.

A Man Apart

A Man Apart is a 2003 film about a guy working with the DEA group who patrol the California-Mexico border. He gets mixed in with some dangerous people and his wife gets killed. The film follows his fight for revenge. It stars Vin Diesel.

The Decline

A new film available on Netflix which is about a fatal accident at a remote survivalist training camp which sends people into a panic and sets the stage for a chilling showdown. The audience scored it 86 per cent on Rotten Tomatoes.

Mark of the Devil

Mark of the Devil is another new horror movie on Netflix this year. The film is from Mexico and is in Spanish. It’s about two sisters who find an ancient book, when they read from the book they invite the Devil into their homes. Their only salvation is the help of a priest who has also been possessed.

Hollow Point

Hollow Point is about a college professor, whose wife and daughter are senselessly murdered. He then finds himself caught up in a war between a group of vigilantes and the criminals that infest their city.

The Handmaid’s Tale

The Handmaid’s Tale is a dystopian series about the rich upper class who hire fertile women to have their babies. The show centres around June, a fertile woman, who lives as a concubine to an officer and his wife. While she is forced to agree to their strict rules she rebels to fight for her freedom and to be reunited with her daughter.

The Cold Light of Day

Action/thriller that was released in 2012, The Cold Light of Day is about Will, a Wall Street businessman, whose life changes when his family is kidnapped during a trip. As he embarks on a mission to save them, he is followed by intelligence agents.

The film stars Henry Cavill, Bruce Willis and Sigourney Weaver.

How to Fix a Drug Scandal

How to Fix a Drug Scandal is another one of Netflix’s true crime documentaries. The series follows the cases of two crime lab chemists who were found out to be taking the drugs they were meant to be testing.

Within this, the show looks at how this leads to a huge misconduct case and thousands of criminal convictions being overturned and costing the state millions in payouts.

Midsommar

A very strange and trippy horror film about a festival in Sweden at the height of summer – when they only get a couple of hours of darkness. Florence Pugh plays the lead role, and the film follows her experience of dealing with family trauma and an unhealthy relationship.

Loads of weird rituals happen during their eight days in this place. It’s very gory and disorientating. If you want to question the meaning of life and your place in it, this one’s for you!
