Monster creators reveal exactly how many seasons they want to make, after Lizzie Borden

If you’ve somehow already blasted through Monster: The Lizzie Borden Story, there’s good news: Ryan Murphy and Ian Brennan have much bigger plans for the Netflix true crime anthology.

They’ve previously tackled Jeffrey Dahmer, Lyle and Erik Menendez and Ed Gein, with Lizzie Borden now joining the increasingly alarming collection of real-life killers. 

While Netflix hasn’t officially announced a fifth season yet, the show’s creators have now revealed exactly how many instalments they’d like to make.

Spoiler: It’s a lot.

Speaking to The Hollywood Reporter, co-creator Ian Brennan was asked how many Monster seasons he and Murphy want to make in total, and whether they already have their next subject lined up.

His answer suggests we could be nowhere near the end of the anthology yet.

“We never do. We always switch. It’s always three or four different ones, and we toggle between. There’s a hopper of three things, but Ryan and I both said we want to do 10 of them,” Brennan said.

So, the current plan is for 10 Monster seasons in total.

That doesn’t mean Netflix has actually commissioned 10 seasons, though. At the moment, the anthology is only up to season four, with Monster: The Lizzie Borden Story being the latest instalment.

The creators apparently have several possible subjects floating around rather than one definite next “monster”.

“It’s a fairly exhaustive list, but it’s tricky,” Brennan explained. “You’d be surprised at how many subjects we start and then abandon, because it’s just not [right].”

Apparently, picking a person to centre an entire Monster season around is much harder than it looks.

“You can really tell when it’s wrong right away, because you’re asking people to spend seven or eight or nine or 10 hours getting inside this person’s head. They better be really interesting.”

At the moment, there’s no confirmed season five subject. Murphy has previously spoken to Variety about having a “maybe one day” file of potential stories for future seasons, so it seems the pair aren’t exactly running out of ideas.

There are some notorious names they have specifically ruled out. Brennan has previously said that serial killer John Wayne Gacy isn’t right for Monster, because he feels there is “nothing redemptive” about him. The team has apparently reached a similar conclusion about Golden State Killer Joseph James DeAngelo Jr.

“The second the name comes up for us, every year, both of us go, No. There’s no pathos,” Brennan said.

So while Monster might have a theoretical six more seasons ahead of it, that doesn’t mean every infamous murderer is automatically getting the Ryan Murphy treatment.
