The Odyssey is now BFI IMAX’s highest-grossing film of all time, so here’s the whole top 10
It seems Christopher Nolan is in competition with himself
Christopher Nolan’s adaptation of the renowned epic, The Odyssey, has become the BFI IMAX’s biggest and highest grossing film to date, surpassing the £2.5 million record of the 2009 Avatar.
BFI IMAX, the UK’s largest cinema, has reportedly sold more than 101,000 tickets for The Odyssey, generating £2,683,987 for entry to a single-screen, as well as achieving a 95 per cent occupancy rate across showtimes.
While Avatar is obviously the second highest-grossing film, which other blockbuster films has Christopher Nolan’s The Odyssey surpassed? Here’s the complete top 10 ranking.
10. Avatar: The Way of Water

via 20th Century Studios
In 10th place, we have the second of two Avatar movies, Avatar: The Way of Water. The film, directed by James Cameron, was released in 2022.
9. Interstellar

via Warner Bros.
In ninth place we have Christopher Nolan’s 2014 film ,Interstellar, the first of six of his movies to be mentioned on the list. He really is in competition with himself.
8. Dunkirk

via Warner Bros.
Up next is the 2017 film Dunkirk which was directed by (you guessed it) Christopher Nolan!
7. Dune: Part Two

via Warner Bros.
In seventh place, we have director Denis Villeneuve’s 2024 film, Dune: Part Two. Look at that landscape, you can’t say it’s not beautiful.
6. The Dark Knight Rises

via Warner Bros.
Christopher Nolan continues to chart by taking sixth place with his 2012 film, The Dark Knight Rises.
5. The Dark Knight

via Warner Bros.
… and Christopher Nolan continues to take fifth place with the original The Dark Knight, released in 2008.
4. Star Wars: The Force Awakens

via Disney
In fifth place is J.J. Abram’s 2015 film, Star Wars: The Force Awakens. It’s unsurprising a Star Wars film is on this list considering how huge the franchise is.
3. Oppenheimer

via Universal Pictures
In third place is Christopher Nolan’s second highest grossing film at BFI IMAX, Oppenheimer. It caused quite a stir back in 2023 (we’ll never forget Barbenheimer summer), and continues to be marvelled at many years later.
2. Avatar

via 20th Century Studios
The 2009 Avatar, which had held the first place spot for over 16 years, has now been pushed to second place. Even now, it’s an unforgettable film.
1. The Odyssey

via Universal Pictures
And, in first place is, of course, Christopher Nolan’s The Odyssey, released July of this year.
Audiences cannot stop discussing his incredible use of practical effects and zero CGI, as well as his celebrity-packed cast. Christopher Nolan just keeps setting the bar higher and higher for himself. Who knows what masterpiece he’ll come up with next?
