The whole thing spiralled from one completely innocent Disney moment. Toni had filmed herself handing Peter Pan a crocheted duck keychain, but what initially looked like just another niche Disney clip quickly found a much bigger audience.

After starting out with roughly 10,000 views, the video eventually passed the million mark, and the comments section soon became a very different place.

Some viewers even suggested there could be something sinister behind the gift, with one writing: “Slice that duck open and make sure there’s no AirTag inside.”

Now, speaking to WIRED, Toni has explained what her life is actually like away from the viral clips. She has been married for four years and works full-time as the manager of a retail store. Despite her huge Disney presence online, she has no formal affiliation with the brand and says making Disney content is simply a hobby.

“It’s not like I’m going to the store or to my job and thinking about Peter Pan,” she told WIRED. “It’s just that when I’m inside Disney, I’m able to release my inner child and the kid who doesn’t want to grow up. And that’s what [Peter Pan] stands for.”

Toni says her husband is “really supportive” of what she does, and that his favourite Disney character is Cars’ Lightning McQueen.

The backlash has gone considerably further than strangers leaving comments on her videos.

According to Toni, someone managed to work out where she was employed and posted the address online. Her manager subsequently changed her working hours because of concerns over her safety.

“It’s definitely taken a toll on my mental health,” she says. “Imagine waking up to thousands of comments saying you’re a crazy stalker lady every single day.”

Toni says the situation has been particularly difficult because she feels people have completely misunderstood what was happening in the original clip.

“People really just took a five-second video of me with Peter Pan out of context and ran with it,” she says.

The attention has now become so overwhelming that Toni says she has been too frightened to return to the Disney parks for several weeks, meaning she’s also stopped making Peter Pan content altogether.

What started as a wholesome hobby about embracing her “inner child” has therefore turned into something much more unsettling, with Toni now having to think about her own safety.
