Invincible showrunners explain Tech Jacket’s gender swap, and it’s kinda ridiculous

She is voiced by Zoey Deutch

As one of the few heroes capable of taking down a Viltrumite in the Invincible universe, people were excited to meet Tech Jacket in season four of the hit Amazon Prime show.

Things are really starting to heat up in Invincible, with the Coalition of Planets finally looking to take down the Viltrumite threat. Given the sheer strength of the few remaining Viltrumites, they need all the help they can get. In the original comics, Tech Jacket, real name Zack Thompson, is a crucial part of that action plan thanks to his high-tech alien suit.

After a few brief cameos last season, Tech Jacket took centre stage in the most recent Invincible episode. But unlike the comics, it’s a woman – here’s why.

Why is Tech Jacket a woman now in Invincible?

First off, I should note that I’m not some dude-bro who hates the fact that Tech Jacket is a woman. Gender swaps to increase representation are crucial in 2026, especially if the original source material is so straight, white, and male.

That being said, the reason they swapped Tech Jacket’s gender, voiced by the iconic Zoey Deutch, is kind of stupid.

“When it came time to introduce Tech Jacket, I realised that if we had brought him straight to comics, he’d be very similar to Mark,” Robert Kirkman and Simon Racioppa explained.

“We decided early on that it would be interesting to gender swap this character. We started thinking about who Zoe would be instead of Zach. There are some exciting things that come up when you change that character.”

Though switching the gender to increase female representation would have been a decent reason, changing the character because he would have been too similar to Mark is INSANE.

Like 90 per cent of the heroes have vague strength-based powers, from Bulletproof to Brit, The Immortal to Viltrumites like Nolan and Mark. If anything, Tech Jacket’s tech jacket separates him from Mark, despite having similar origin stories.

Make it make sense, or at least give it a better reason.
