KCL renamed Queen’s College London to distance itself from King’s College Cambridge

‘As a woman, I feel more empowered with the new name’

King’s College London (KCL) is to be renamed Queen’s College London to separate itself from King’s College Cambridge.

This comes after a survey conducted by the university revealed that 85 per cent of UK university students have mistaken King’s for its Cambridge counterpart.

In an email sent to staff, the university said that this confusion “undermines our achievements, misdirects recognition, and creates unnecessary complications for prospective students, collaborators, and external partners alike.”

It added: “We already have a rivalry with University College London and maintaining a clear and distinct identity is essential in preserving our reputation and competitive standing within both the national and international academic community.”

The King’s Tab spoke to students about what they think about the renaming. One student welcomed the change and said: “It’s about time they changed it as it was getting annoying having to clarify which university I go to.”

Matilda, a second year english student, also agreed, saying: “Not only have we had to experience so much confusion for so long but it’s also been such a male dominated name since the university being opened.”

She added: “As a woman, I feel more empowered with it being Queen’s College London.”

However, Harry, a third year politics student, shared his frustration with the change, explaining: “I’m really annoyed. I’m about to graduate but now I’ll have to change all my LinkedIn posts and sell all my King’s merch on Vinted.”

It’s still unknown when the change will be implemented, but it’s rumoured to happen as soon as possible.
