The Perfect Neighbor creator reveals her theory on why Susan Lorincz killed Ajike Owens
It’s so cruel
After watching The Perfect Neighbor, everyone has been left wondering why Susan Lorincz shot and killed her neighbour Ajike Owens out of nowhere.
Susan Lorincz fired a bullet through a locked door, killing the mother of four who was banging on the door to try and get her son’s iPad back. She claims she did it out of self defence as she thought Ajike was going to “kill her,” while others believe it was a racially charged attack.
The Netflix documentary’s creator, who knew Owens in real life, has another theory.

This is why The Perfect Neighbor creator thinks Susan Lorincz did it
In an interview with Film Comment, Geeta Gandbhir explained that she thinks Lorincz “took matters into her own hands” and killed Owens because the police weren’t doing anything. Susan called the Ocala Police Department multiple times in the months prior to the killing to complain about Owens’ kids leaving things on her front garden, and they always viewed the dispute as being very minor.
“My opinion is that the police had dismissed Susan as a nuisance, and so she took matters into her own hands. I think she thought that she would walk, you know?” Gandbhir said.
“Again, these are really dangerous laws that embolden people. It’s not just in Florida; there are other states where castle doctrines exist and are part of the legal framework. It’s mostly used by white people against Black and brown folks. I believe that’s what happened here.”
She is referring to stand your ground laws, which allow people to use deadly force to protect themselves from death or serious injury if they feel threatened, without having to retreat first.

The creator continued: “The only person who ever called the police into that community was Susan. This is a community that has experienced systemic racism and the bias in policing; this is a community that never called the cops. It would not be their choice. Ajike tried several times to do what neighbors do to resolve disputes and talk directly with Susan, and she was greeted with hostility every time.”
