George Clarke appointed Chancellor of Northumbria University

George will succeed Baroness Tanni Grey-Thompson to become the fourth Chancellor of Northumbria Uni

North East architect George Clarke has been appointed Chancellor of Northumbria University.

The 51-year-old, who was born in Sunderland, is best known for his role as presenter in Channel 4’s The Home Show, The Restoration Man and George Clarke’s Amazing Spaces, but has decided to return to his North East roots for this new role.

On 1st November 2025, George will formally become the fourth Chancellor of Northumbria University, just in time for his first graduation ceremonies in December.

In 2015, George was awarded an honorary doctorate of civil law by Northumbria. Coincidentally, he was awarded this by his predecessor, Baroness Tanni Grey-Thompson, on her first day of graduation ceremonies as Chancellor.

George expressed his excitement for the role on Instagram, he said:

“I’m so unbelievably proud and honoured to have been appointed as the new Chancellor of the University of Northumbria. I’m very much looking forward to the next five years in the role and being back home in the North East. THANK YOU @northumbriauni.”

George also told the university:

“I have always kept a close eye on things going on in the region… I am hugely looking forward to meeting with more staff and students from Northumbria University and playing a key role in advocating for the University wherever I can.”

Northumbria University’s Vice-Chancellor and Chief Executive, Professor Andy Long, said:

“George could not be a more fitting choice as our new Chancellor. His own career path is a perfect example of how people can be supported to succeed – and excel – regardless of their background, as long as opportunities are made available to them.”
