University of York professor to chair new Men’s Mental Health Taskforce

York leads £7 million mission to improve men’s mental health

A University of York academic is taking the lead on a major push to improve men’s mental health across York and North Yorkshire.

Professor Paul Galdas, from the Department of Health Sciences, has been appointed Chair of the Men’s Mental Health Taskforce. It’s part of a £7 million “Moving Forward” initiative, launched by David Skaith, Mayor of York and North Yorkshire.

The project aims to bring together experts from health services, charities, and local councils to tackle the rising rates of poor mental health and suicide among men, especially those working in isolated or high-pressure jobs.

Speaking on BBC Politics North, Professor Galdas said that men’s mental health remains on of the region’s most urgent issues. “Suicide is still the leading cause of death for men under 50,” he explained. “Too many continue to suffer in silence. This Taskforce is about building stronger communities where men feel able to speak up and seek help.”

Mayor Skaith praised Galdas’ appointment, calling him an “obvious choice” thanks to his experience within the Men’s Mental Health Taskforce and the Sports Steering Group. He added that the initiative reflects his long-term commitment to improving the wellbeing of communities across York and North Yorkshire.

The Men’s Mental Health Taskforce is part of the Combined Authority’s Moving Forward programme, which focuses on promoting active travel, sport and physical activity, and access to nature through “green prescribing.”

Alongside his new role, Professor Galdas co-chairs the National Men’s Health Academic Network, which advises the Department of Health and Social Care on England’s first Men’s Health Strategy, making York a key part of how men’s wellbeing is supported nationally.
