The Perfect Neighbor: Susan Lorincz’s sister was arrested just days after the trial ended

She lived in the same Florida neighbourhood

The sister of Susan Lorincz, who everyone is talking about thanks to the new documentary The Perfect Neighbour, was arrested for child neglect just days after her sibling’s trial finished.

Netflix’s film follows a seemingly minor dispute that happened in 2023 in a small Florida neighbourhood called Ocala, which ended with Lorincz killing a black neighbour. She fatally shot 35-year-old Ajike “AJ” Shantrell Owens through a locked door after an ongoing disagreement over her kids playing on her front garden.

As seen in The Perfect Neighbor, Lorincz was found guilty of manslaughter on 16th August 2024. Just 11 days later, her sister Ellyn Lorincz was also arrested by the Ocala Police Department and taken into custody at the Marion County Jail on a child neglect charge after failing to look after her young son.

Ellyn spoke at Susan’s trial, explaining that they had a very difficult childhood and a “history of mental health issues” in the family. She said she has PTSD from her father, who sexually and physically abused all of them.

“He beat us, a lot,” she said. “My father was physically, emotionally and sexually abusive to all of us.”

According to local ABC-affiliated news station WCJB, officers said Ellyn kept the autistic child at her home in unsanitary conditions and failed to provide him with food or medicine. They said this had been going on since October 2023.

The arrest report reveals that police were called to Ellyn’s home seven times over the year, finding large amounts of cat feces, moldy food, easily accessible needles, and unsecured medication.

In one instance, as revealed by the Ocala StarBanner, officers were called to her house because she was accused of locking her son outside for hours with little food or drink and not sending him to school. On another occasion, officers witnessed Ellyn use derogatory language towards her son.

Susan Lorincz’s sister told detectives she didn’t want to care for the nine-year-old anymore. The child neglect charge was then dropped two months later, in October 2024.

In a court filing, the State Attorney’s Office said while there was probable cause for arrest, they decided to drop the case after interviewing Ellyn as they thought the likelihood of getting a conviction was “slight”. At a hearing, the court was told that the child is now in foster care.
