Netflix’s The Perfect Neighbor didn’t fully explain – so here’s what happened to the tablet

If you’ve watched The Perfect Neighbor on Netflix, you may have noticed the dispute over a tablet and wondered what actually happened. The story is heartbreaking, and while it may seem like a small detail, it played a part in the tragic chain of events.

Ajike “AJ” Owens’ children were playing in a grassy area next to an Ocala apartment complex when their neighbour, Susan Lorincz, began yelling at them and even used racial slurs. The children left, but accidentally left an iPad behind, which Lorincz took. AJ went across the street with her children to speak with Lorincz about what happened. She knocked on the door, and that is when Lorincz shot through it, hitting AJ, who later died from her injuries.

In the Netflix documentary AJ’s son explained what happened. He said, “So I was going to get my tablet from over there, she had my tablet. I said ‘Put it down’, she put it down, then tried to throw the roller skates at me.” When an officer asked if he was hurt, he said no, but the moment broke hearts for everyone who heard it.

Now, a lot of people on Reddit and TikTok were wondering what actually happened to the tablet that ultimately resulted in a tragic event.

It seems like she did. In a GoFundMe entitled “Justice for Ajike ‘AJ’ Owens and Her Children”, Pamela, AJ’s mother explained what happened to the tablet. She wrote, “The children left but accidentally left an iPad behind, which the woman took. When one of the children went to her residence to retrieve it, she threw it, hitting the boy and cracking the screen.”

So, basically, Susan Lorincz threw both the iPad and the roller skates at AJ’s son.

Today, AJ’s family are still dealing with her death, and her children are now in therapy. Her mum, Pamela Dias, has started a fund to help other victims of race-based violence.
