The Perfect Neighbor director shares moment she talked to Ajike Owens after filming wrapped

‘This may sound crazy’

Everything about The Perfect Neighbor on Netflix is emotional, but for director Geeta Gandbhir, making the documentary wasn’t just storytelling; it was grief work, and in a touching moment, she revealed she even spoke to AJ in her dreams.

The documentary follows the devastating case of Ajike “AJ” Owens, a Black mother of four who was shot and killed by her neighbour, Susan Lorincz, in Florida. The story is both heartbreaking and deeply personal for Gandbhir, who had a family connection to Owens through her sister-in-law.

In an interview with Film Comment, Gandbhir explained that making The Perfect Neighbor became something much bigger than just a film. “The hope is always very lofty: to change some of these laws that put so many people’s lives in danger, especially those of people of color,” she said. “I believe there are 700 deaths a year due to stand your ground laws. That’s 700 people who could still be alive, and that’s important to me.”

But it’s her next comment that really stays with you. Gandbhir shared that she felt a spiritual connection to Ajike throughout the process, one that even carried into her dreams. “This may sound crazy,” she said, “but I think I talked to her in my dreams. I want her to rest and to feel that her children are cared for. I want her to know we’re carrying on in her name.”

Her words capture just how much heart went into making the documentary. It wasn’t just about revisiting a tragic case, it was about honouring Ajike’s memory and pushing for change so that no one else suffers the same fate.

Through The Perfect Neighbor, Gandbhir revealed that Aj’s mother, Pam, is hoping for a movement. “She wants change.”
