The High School Catfish to The Perfect Neighbor: Ranking Netflix docs by their Letterboxd score

Number one has annoyed me so much

Netflix documentaries are amazing, especially the film ones where it doesn’t make us sit through five parts of dragged out story. Give me an amazing and / or harrowing true event and change my life. Simples. Netflix create so many high quality documentaries that nearly always hit the headlines, but what is the ranking of all of them based on critics and users as per their Letterboxd? Surprising it is, I’ll tell you that. Some I agree with and some I can’t stand, but this is the ranking of the most well known Netflix documentaries by their Letterboxd score.

14. What Jennifer Did (Score: 2.4)

Netflix documentaries ranking Letterboxd

What Jennifer Did from last year comes at the bottom with a pretty woeful 2.4. It was dragged for its AI usage and for the fact that people said reading the Wikipedia page would save you 80 minutes. Yikes.

13. Poop Cruise (Score: 2.5)

Netflix documentaries ranking

The main qualm people had with this year’s Trainwreck: Poop Cruise is all the dramatics of it. One Letterboxd review said the people on the ship discussed having to poo in a bag as if “they were being made to eat people”. I argue that’s part of the fun, personally.

12. Unknown Number: The High School Catfish (Score: 2.7)

I’m honestly shocked this one is so low in the Netflix documentaries Letterboxd ranking because I actually loved it. It was one of the most shocking and watchable of the year! Kendra is just… unspeakably evil.

11. A Deadly American Marriage (Score: 3.1)

This one caused a lot of debate about whether they were guilty or not and told the story from both sides.

10. The Tinder Swindler (Score: 3.1)

WHAT A CLASSIC! We all remember where we were, and it’s just sneaking into the top 10. I feel like you actually had to be there for this saga. Tinder never was the same again.

9. Titan: The Oceangate Disaster (Score: 3.1)

An extremely illuminating examination of just how wild the ego of the CEO was and how he really did have blood on his hands.

8. The Astroworld Tragedy (Score: 3.2)

Netflix documentaries ranking

This deep dive into the events that led to the tragedy at Travis Scott’s Astroworld festival features interviews with attendees, survivors and paramedics and it makes Live Nation look very bad indeed.

7. American Murder: The Family Next Door (Score: 3.3)

One of the darkest docs I’ve ever watched. The footage of Chris Watts in this, knowing her murdered Shanann and his daughters, will literally make your blood run cold. Have such vivid memories of being so horrified by it in the midst of the pandemic.

6. Fyre (Score: 3.3)

Honestly, another cultural PHENOMENON. Fyre Festival is one of the most fascinating sagas everywhere and Netflix was cooking on high powered gas when they made this one. Everyone was seated. Can’t believe it’s just missing out on the top five of the Netflix documentaries Letterboxd ranking.

5. Woodstock ’99 (Score: 3.5)

ranking Netflix documentaries

Another CORKER from the Trainwreck series. I’ve done my fair share of festivals, but this one absolutely traumatised me. When I saw the footage of the contaminated water and then people mud sliding through literal poo my jaw was in the abyss.

4. My Octopus Teacher (Score: 3.8)

Cannot even tell you how much this film winds me up. The most obnoxious documentary ever. Rich man pesters octopus. Let’s just leave it alone!

3. Grenfell: Uncovered (Score: 3.8)

One of the most upsetting and anger-rising documentaries ever. Truly unthinkably sad and a gruelling look at something that was so preventable. A hard but crucial watch.

2. The Perfect Neighbor (Score: 3.8)

Straight in almost as the highest rated of all the Netflix documentaries in the Letterboxd ranking here is the brand new and very acclaimed The Perfect Neighbor. If you watch this doc you’ll know exactly why – such a moving piece of filmmaking and a story that is honestly unbelievable to watch unfold via body cam.

1. Miss Americana (Score: 4.0)

Look, I have watched Miss Americana and I like Taylor Swift to a certain extent – but this being the number one in the ranking is sheer indulgent glazing. Look at all the more important documentaries before it! Truly annoying, but another chart victory for Taylor Swift, I guess!
