MAFS UK bride Grace calls out experts’ advice on intimacy in the commitment ceremony

‘Buying contraceptive is a practicality. It is not a form of consent’

The MAFS UK bride Grace Law has spoken out about consent and intimacy, after her discussion with the experts in the commitment ceremony.

Grace feels “there are irresponsible edits across this production” and questioned whether the experts’ advice on MAFS UK “encompassed the issues raised” about intimacy.

Let’s recap what everyone actually said in that MAFS commitment ceremony. Grace described an incident in which Ashley paid for a date, then they bought contraceptive. He wanted to have sex, but she didn’t, and he expressed disappointment. Grace explained: “That anxiety about the grand gesture and the transactional nature played true”. Ashley clarified he didn’t pay for dinner so Grace would sleep with him. He told the experts: “I’m annoyed at myself for getting frustrated, but I couldn’t help it.”

Paul Brunson brought up “the anxiety of the expectation that ‘this means that I have to give you sex.'” He asked Grace:  “I want to take this notion of feeling obligated. What about your experience makes you feel as if a gesture means you having to cross a boundary of yours?” The conversation then moved on.

Grace has now posted a lengthy Instagram statement about how intimacy was handled in the MAFS commitment ceremony. She wrote: “In case this needs saying, and I fear it does: buying contraceptive is a practicality. It is not a form of consent. You can withdraw consent at any time.

“You do not owe anyone sex. I especially do not owe it to a stranger I met on a reality TV show. I do not accept any alternative opinion.

“These couch sittings are about an hour each to film. You barely see any of it. For example, when Ashley put me on the bench, he was intoxicated and I was sober. This impacted my desire to participate. There are irresponsible edits across this production. I trust the viewers will be alert and vigilant to this while watching. I’m curious if anyone feels the advice we received was useful or encompassed the issues raised?”

Grace also shared a video of her reacting to the expert Mel’s advice about consent on the Begin Again podcast.

In the clip, Mel discusses how some people thinking a partner should “owe” them sex if they pay for dinner. Grace responds: “Where did you get that example from, Mel?” Mel also explains that consent should be enthusiastic and continuous. Grace retorts: “If that’s how you feel, why were you silent?”

A spokesperson for MAFS UK told The Tab: “Married at First Sight is an unscripted reality show that reflects the wide variety of sometimes complex and challenging relationship dynamics that exist in the real world. The commitment ceremonies are filmed over several hours and the resulting programmes are a fair and impartial account of the issues the couples raise with the experts during the sessions.”
