How to survive your last Freshers’ Week as a third year (without embarrassing yourself)

Go get your free Dominos pizza, girl

Freshers’ Week is an exciting time for any uni student, even the ones preparing to lock in for exams and leave within a year.

From nights out to meeting new people, it sometimes if feels like the Freshers‘ era never ends at uni. But how do you navigate the first week back without worrying you look a little too old to be giving Irish dance society a go?

Going out isn’t just for first years

Going out is a core part of university for many, and just because your three years in doesn’t mean you have to stop. Freshers’ Week is also one of the best weeks to go out, the clubs are packed, there are free shots and wristbands galore. However, don’t be overdoing it. Unlike your first year, you’ve got stuff to do! There’s work happening straight away and lets be real, can you actually still do a five day bender?

Its a great way to just let go with your mates, whilst being reminded of that awkward first week were you were scared to even dance in front of them, and your not going to get a chance to partake in multiple VKs once the ball starts rolling on your course.

It’s acceptable to enjoy some of the Freshers’ nights out bur those people who go out to terrorise first years? Yep, they’re gross. Don’t ruin someone else’s Freshers’ Week just because your feeling sad about the last year of uni.

The freebies are Freshers’ Fair are fair game but don’t take the piss

Freshers’ Fairs are a huge part of starting university, they give you a chance to find out about society’s and (more importantly) get a load of free stuff. Now by third year you have paid your dos, so its only fair you still get a little bit of the action right? Like most of the aspects of Freshers‘, just don’t embarrass yourself and go overboard.

Definitely go to the fair. Grab your free slice of Dominos or random goodie bag that has a lollipop and a lanyard in it and just enjoy your  trekking round the very busy exam hall. Don’t start pushing first years out the way to get to the wheel first (I’ve seen it happen), how desperate are you to spin for a bag of Haribo Star Mix? Why not even talk to some societies you never thought about or have never even hard of. Honourable mentions to the infamous duck society at Uni of York and Glasgow’s Shrek society.

Now – about joining societies

I feel like you hear a lot of people say one of the things they regret not doing the most at uni was joining enough societies. They’re a brilliant way to meet new people and have interesting (sometimes questionable) experiences, but its easy to feel intimidated in first year. You don’t really want to go on your own and honestly would rather stay home wishing you were home with your dog. But by third year, you’ve hopefully made a few mates who would totally be down for a tango society give it a go session.

Trying out a new society is a great way to make the most of the start of uni, before dissertations and ugly exams start to creep in, and if you look a bit odd it doesn’t matter cause you’re just giving it a go. You never know, you might help out a nervous fresher who isn’t quite sure why they came. By “help out” I mean embarrass yourself so much that they feel better but hey, swings and roundabouts.

Plus, by this point a lot of older years are the running the society which can often take a bit of the fun out of it. You just get to go and try something new without any of the responsibility, so why not let loose before you have to find one of those ‘job’ things.

Unfortunately, you will need to lock in this year. I know, I know, I don’t want to hear i either. But you’re a third year now, you basically own the library. Stand your ground! By now you know all the best study spots and you can get a head start whilst all the first years are still figuring out how to get into the building. It’s undoubtedly going to be the most stressful part of your time at university so why not get a little ahead of the year during Freshers’.

Overall, doing Freshers’ as a third year means enjoying yourself but also recognising that you’re not that silly little first year anymore. Get ahead but also have fun to put you in the right place to do well in your (potentially) last year in higher education. I can feel the tears coming already.
