Police audio reveals chilling details as university student is in court over death of newborn

The cause of death of the cheerleader’s baby is still unknown

Police audio has revealed chilling details in the case of a university student who is currently in court faces charges regarding the death of her newborn child.

21-year-old Laken Snelling has been accused of giving birth to a baby boy and hiding his body in a trash bag in her closet. The baby boy was found last month, wrapped in a towel. Snelling was later charged with abuse of a corpse, tampering with physical evidence and concealing the birth of an infant.

Snelling had just started her senior year at University of Kentucky, US, studying Interdisciplinary Disability Studies. She has since dropped out of her studies, but has pleaded not guilty to the charges against her.

Police said in statement at the time of her arrest: “On Wednesday, August 27, 2025, around 10:30 a.m., officers were dispatched for an unresponsive infant at a residence in the 400 block of Park Avenue. When officers arrived, they located an infant that was pronounced deceased at the scene.

“Laken Snelling, 21, was arrested on August 31, 2025, and charged with Abuse of a Corpse, Tampering with Physical Evidence, and Concealing the Birth of an Infant. She is currently being held at the Fayette County Detention Center. Ms. Snelling is the infant’s mother.”

Now, police audio has given even more haunting detail from the scene. On Wednesday 27th August at 10:34 am, a Lexington Police Department dispatcher received a 911 call from someone who reported the disturbing discovery. “Complainant just found a dead baby in a closet,” an incident report has said. “It is cold to the touch.”

The report did not mention who the caller was. Emergency services were at the scene minutes later.

It’s since been reported that Snelling wasn’t home when police, EMTs and the fire department arrived. She was found five minutes away from the home, and was taken in to a local police headquarters to be “checked out”. She was arrested four days later.

Results of a preliminary autopsy on the child were inconclusive. Snelling is scheduled to appear in court for a preliminary hearing on September 26th.
