Hacks icon Hannah Einbinder explains exactly why she said ‘free Palestine’ in Emmys speech
‘It is my obligation, as a Jewish person’
Hannah Einbinder has been an outspoken support of Gaza and has frequently made statements in support of Palestine as Israel continues committing genocide. Einbinder has become such an icon not just for her work on Hacks, of which she is a multiple Emmy award recipient, but for always being on the right side of history and using her platform to the max – even when I’m sure many network bigwigs wish she wouldn’t. Hannah Einbinder, who’s Jewish, had just won her latest Emmy for Hacks when she said “Free Palestine” on the big platform – and has now given some context in an extra interview about why it’s so vitally important for her to spread this message.
‘It is my obligation’
Speaking in a Q&A with press and her Hacks co-star Jean Smart, Hannah Einbinder was asked “When you were up on stage you talked about Palestine – I know you signed a pledge too. Can you talk about that please?”
Hannah Einbinder says: “I thought it was important to talk about Palestine because it’s an issue very dear to my heart. I have friends in Gaza who are working as frontline workers, as doctors right now, in the north of Gaza to provide care for pregnant women and for school children – to create schools in the refugee camps.

“It’s an issue very close to my heart for many reasons. I feel like it is my obligation as a Jewish person to distinguish Jews from the state of Israel. Because our religion and our culture is such an important and long-standing institution that is really separate to the sort of ethno-nationalist state.

“And in terms of the pledge, it’s like many movements. Boycotting is an effective tool to apply pressure on the powers that be to meet the moment. The film workers for Palestine does not boycott individuals – it only boycotts institutions that are correctly implicit in genocide. It’s important to me and I think it’s an important measure, so I was happy to be part of it.”
The speech has received praise and gone viral online. With that mic drop moment, it’s obviously easy to see why.
And if you loved what Hannah Einbinder had to say about Palestine at the Emmys but haven’t yet seen Hacks, I cannot recommend it enough. Easily the best TV show to come out of the 2020s. The Emmys list of wins speaks for itself.
