Congrats to Owen Cooper on being the youngest Emmy guy – but sorry king, this girly did it first

The Adolescence actor is the youngest male, but NOT the youngest actor

At Sunday night’s Emmy Awards, Owen Cooper, 15, became the youngest man to win an award, taking home the trophy for his work in Netflix’s Adolescence.

When Adolescence dropped earlier this year, it quickly became a behemoth. Literally everyone was talking about it, even the Prime Minister, and it soon garnered a huge audience that broke Netflix records. Brilliantly filmed with no cuts, Adolescence followed Stephen Graham’s character after his son, played by Owen Cooper, was arrested for the murder of a female school friend. The show grappled with some incredibly dark themes, shedding light on the prevalence of incels and how social media can warp the minds of young men, especially.

Though some feared that Owen would not get his well-deserved praise at the Emmys, he beat out acting giants like Javier Bardem for the Best Supporting Actor award.

Accepting the award from Sydney Sweeney, he said: “Honestly, when I started these drama classes a couple years back, I didn’t expect to be even in the United States, never mind here. It may have my name on this award, but it really belongs to the people behind the camera and Stephen and all the cast. I think tonight proves that if you listen and you focus and step out of your comfort zone, you can achieve anything in life.”

Though Owen is the youngest ever male to win an Emmy, his female counterpart had him beat by a full 40 years.

If not Owen Cooper, who is the youngest Emmy winner?

Look, winning an Emmy at any age is pretty stellar work, let alone in your very first project at the age of 15. Owen Cooper deserves high praise, and yet, the crown for the youngest ever winner goes to Roxana Zal.

Though she’s since left the world of show business to become a fashion designer, Roxana Zal was just 14 when she won her Emmy for Something About Amelia in 1984.

Alongside Ted Danson and Glenn Close, Roxana played the titular character who, after fearing for her younger sibling’s life, admits to being molested by her father. Roxana went on to star in NCIS, Broken Vessels, Daddy’s Girl, Three Way, and Lois & Clark: The New Adventures of Superman.
