Guys, Owen Cooper just said this very British slang that totally confused the Americans

Honestly, it’s iconic

Owen Cooper has already made a name for himself with his breakout role alongside Stephen Graham in the hit drama Adolescence. Critics praised his performance for being raw, natural and properly impressive, especially considering Adolescence was his first major acting job.

But now Owen Cooper has gone viral again, and this time it’s for saying one very specific British slag on American late-night TV, and yes, the Americans were definitely confused.

So, what exactly does he say?

Owen Cooper was on The Tonight Show with Jimmy Fallon, comparing British and American snacks. At one point, Jimmy Fallon compared Maltesers (a British favourite) to Whoppers, a very American sweet (basically chocolate-covered malt balls). Owen was immediately disgusted, and said, “I tried Whoppers today. They’re minging. I hated them.”

“Minging.” On US television. Said with full disgust. Jimmy Fallon, clearly not familiar with the word, just replied, “You’re totally wrong.”

So, how did people react?

The clip made it to TikTok in record time, and UK viewers were immediately in the comments. One person commented, “Bro said minging on Jimmy Fallon, I’m obsessed.” Another said, “He’s just like us. No fake faces, just honest reviews.” A third person said, “Protect him at all costs.” I agree.

Some Americans were confused by the word. One person asked, “What does that mean?” under a comment that said, “Saying ‘minging’ on Jimmy Fallon is iconic,” while another added, “Jimmy didn’t have a clue what he said.”

The fact that Cooper didn’t swap it out for something more American, and didn’t bother softening his reaction, just made the whole moment even better. It’s the kind of honesty you rarely see from young celebs trying to break into Hollywood. But it clearly works for him.

Minging might be his favourite word now, honestly

This isn’t even the first time he’s said it. Owen has used the word on the Adolescence set too. There’s a behind-the-scenes clip of him describing a dodgy hot chocolate prop as “minging”, with exactly the same tone.

For a new actor, Owen Cooper already feels strangely familiar. He’s talented, clearly, but also sounds like someone you might sit next to on the bus. And in an industry full of polished media training and fake polite interviews, him casually calling an American snack disgusting on national TV feels almost revolutionary.

Let’s just hope he never stops doing it.
