The city that doesn’t stop: What’s on in Sheffield in September

Grab your mates for a good time this month

| UPDATED

Just because the kids are back at school doesn’t mean Sheffield is done with the fun. As we transition from beer gardens to pub booths, the city has got loads on offer to get you out and about.

Markets after markets

Sheffield is known for some killer markets no matter the season. From food to prints to clothes and accessories, you can find all manner of quirky things at any of the local stalls (and usually a pint or two as well).

Peddler Market, an indie night market, will be delighting Kelham to some devious food and drinks on the 5th and 6th of September. The next weekend creative Quayside Market will flow down beside Victoria Canal on the 13th and 14th, whilst Nether Edge Market will be having a wholesome Sunday also on the 14th. To round off September, inner-city flower market Pollen will have ‘”local growers, florists and makers”.  It’s safe to say we’re spoilt for choice.

Big stars hit Sheffield

If you’re desperate for your live music fix, there’s some great names heading to the city this month. Lewis Capaldi is kicking off his 2025 tour with two sold out nights at the Utilita Arena on the September 6th and 7th.

Later in the month Busted and McFly will go, playfully, head to head on the 26th, but are back in November in case you missed the chance. And the Simply Red cherry on top for the venue will be the 90s legends celebrating their 40th Anniversary on the 30th.

Arts and culture galore

For those who fancy a more laid back September, the Steel City has of course got some options for you. Legendary musician and former bassist of Joy Division Peter Hook will be “In Conversation” at Sheffield City hall on the 7th for a Q&A, a sure fire memorable evening. But if you’re looking for laughs, Rob Beckett is playing the Hall earlier on the 7th with his new show Giraffe.

The Botanical Gardens hosts large outdoor market Art in the Gardens that same weekend, on September 6th and 7th, with crafters coming from all over the country to take in the beautiful landscape.

However, for anyone who wants to get stuck in to some art themselves, OEC Sheffield will be hosting a Drink and Draw session on the 19th September. It’s something a little different and I’m sure will be a… let’s say memorable occasion for you and your pals.

Freshers’!

We can’t round up September without mentioning a few of the stellar Freshers’ events taking place all over the city for new and seasoned students.

We all miss Leadmill of course, but fear not! Their events are moving to various locations around Sheffield, including Foundry, Corporation, Network, and Sidney and Matilda. With silent discos, ABBA parties, and, of course, Sonic Saturdays, this year’s freshers can still get the hit of Leadmill that Sheffield students have lived on for decades.

Organised Chaos are still bringing the chaos after 13 years, with loads of nights out for Hallam. There are still some AAA passes available, but go quickly to not miss out the fun.

Festival season ain’t over yet

Festival season is never done for Sheffield. For anyone looking to marry a love of art with a festival atmosphere, Sheffields street art festival Lick of Paint Fest is a perfect activity for this weekend. You can watch artworks spring up all over the city this weekend, or even get stuck in yourself at various talks and workshops.

Castlegate Festival will be lighting up Exchange Street from 2pm-6am on the 20th for an all night party. There are tons of featured acts and it’s free entry, so what’s not to love.

Devonshire Green hosts a bunch of fun days throughout the year and on 27th September Dev Green festival will take place. We saw some great acts on there at the Fringe fest for Tramlines, and now with live DJs, food, and crafts – it promises to be a good one.
