Incoming York fresher forced into private housing after uni ‘ran out of accommodation’
Hannah said she was ‘so stressed’ after missing the guaranteed accommodation deadline
Everyone knows that going to university is a huge step in most student’s lives; it can be an incredibly exciting time, but it can also be very stressful for freshers.
Accommodation is one of the things that foments everything. You make friends with your flat, cooking together, partying and even drafting bin rosters together.
However, Hannah, an incoming fresher explained she was told the university had “run out of accommodation” after she missed the deadline for guaranteed college rooms.
She explained the stress of finding accommodation at the University of York and how she’s had to find private alternatives which have turned out to be a lot more expensive.
Hannah said she was ‘so stressed’ continually checking her emails
@cooliocramz Replying to @Jessticles forgot to mention that when we called the lady again she said look at private accom bc i wouldn’t be getting anything. but another guy told us to just wait for the uni given ones. #fyp #uniofyork #freshers #universityofyork #accomodation
Due to start in a matter of weeks, Hannah explained that she accepted York as her insurance choice after not getting the grades she wanted.
She explained that she was already upset, processing the fact that she wasn’t going to the university she wanted to, didn’t get the grades she wanted, and then on top of that, she was having to sort out accommodation, with very few spaces left.
Hannah acknowledged that she didn’t read the email outlining the guaranteed accommodation deadline, which was July 31st, but was distressed to learn that she would have to wait for all clearing students to be allocated accommodation first, and then she would be offered any of the leftover rooms.
Unfortunately, Hannah was informed that there was no rooms on campus left, so she would have to seek private accommodation, which is upwards of £200 per week.
