Sheffield SU President Daisy Watson announces resignation five months after re-election
It comes after ‘careful and difficult reflection’
The President of Sheffield Students’ Union has resigned five months after securing re-election.
In March, Daisy Watson became the first Sheffield SU President to be elected for a second term – receiving 1,564 votes. She was initially elected in March 2024.
In a statement released this morning, Daisy said her last day in office would now be August 27th following a period of “careful and difficult reflection”.
She said: “To me, leadership means acting with integrity, even when that means making difficult choices.
“After much thought, I believe stepping down is the most honest decision, for myself, the organisation, and for the students who placed their trust in me. My respect for the student movement remains strong, and my belief in what students can achieve together is deeper than ever.”
Her time in the role, she added, had been one of the most “profound and challenging experiences of my life” and it had been a “privilege” to represent “a student community that is diverse, compassionate, and fiercely committed to justice”.
In an accompanying statement, Sheffield SU paid tribute to Daisy’s “hard work and achievements” – such as ratifying a new SU partnership with Sheffield City Council and successfully campaigning for South Yorkshire bus franchising.
It added it was currently exploring options for the vacant position, and would provide an update in due course.
On the rest of the Student’s Union team, Daisy added: “The 2025/26 Officer Team is made up of passionate, principled, and deeply capable individuals, each bringing their own vision, energy, and commitment to the role.
“I have full confidence in their ability to lead with courage, integrity, and care for our student community. I cannot wait to see what they do with these roles over the next year, it will undoubtedly be amazing.”
