Sheffield Students’ Union faces £400k University grant cut in 2025-26

Plans are being made to address the cutback

Sheffield Students’ Union is facing a £400,o00 cut to the annual grant it receives from the University of Sheffield.

The SU – which has been ranked best in the UK for seven consecutive years – will see the reduction apply from the 2025-26 academic year.

A University of Sheffield spokesperson has told The Sheffield Tab that whilst the university “has been making savings”, they had taken the decision not to implement the change this year to give the SU “as much notice as possible” to plan for addressing the cutback.

SU finances not only fund the facilities within the building, but also provide the budgets for its 260 societies.

According to Forge Press, the reduction to the current £4.15m grant – alongside inflation and government-led changes to the living wage and National Insurance contributions – could see the SU facing a £692,000 financial shortfall.

They also reported that plans to tackle this so far include promoting support of requests for flexible working, vacancy control, and freezing recruitment from November.

In a statement to The Sheffield Tab, an Sheffield SU spokesperson said: “Sheffield Students’ Union is facing the challenge of a tough financial climate for Higher Education in the UK leading to a reduction in grants given by the University, an increase in national insurance contributions, and inflationary costs. We have been proactive in working on mitigations to address these impacts, including identifying non-staff cost savings, and additional income opportunities.

“We are currently reviewing and re-prioritising our staffing roles and structures to align them with our new strategy, and to respond to current financial challenges. Our strategy will see us undertake ambitious and exciting work focused on student influence and belonging, but it is essential that we are able to deliver this in a sustainable manner.”

The new SU strategy – introduced last year – sets out its mission for “outstanding student experience”

They continued: “We are endeavouring to minimise impact on our staff whilst ensuring our services are aligned with the ambitions of our new strategy. Proposals for the revised structure are now under consultation with staff.”

The spokesperson for the University of Sheffield said: “In response to the financial challenges facing UK universities, including Sheffield, we have been making savings across the institution with a focus on maintaining an excellent education and experience for our students. This also applies to the annual grant the University provides to the Students’ Union, with the same expectation that student support is prioritised. To give the SU as much time as possible to plan for these savings, we made no changes to its grant for this financial year.

“We will continue to work closely with our SU to deliver the fantastic student experience and education for which Sheffield is renowned.”
