Endcliffe vs Ranmoor: A Sheffield student’s guide to first year accomodation
Too much choice? We’ve got you covered
Choosing first-year accommodation can be a terrifying task. The combination of a lack of information and an excess of options could leave you making a decision based on rumours alone. So, whether you’re planning to make Endcliffe and Ranmoor your home in 2025/26 (or you’re just making a well-researched contingency plan) this guide will give you all the information you need to make your pick.
Endcliffe vs Ranmoor – What’s the big deal?
Endcliffe and Ranmoor are two of the University of Sheffield’s student villages.
Endcliffe
Endcliffe offers eighteen different blocks to choose from, featuring a variety of room options, including en-suite, deluxe, studio, and shared bathroom accommodations. It sits below Fulwood Road, and is around a 15 minute walk from the Students’ Union. It also features an abundance of green space, with huge fields and a lovely pond to relax around with friends.

Its two main claims to fame are the Village Shop and the Edge.
The Village Shop is an on-site mini-supermarket, stocking everything from fresh fruit to vape juice, making it perfect for quick stops after lectures.
The Edge is a massive social hub that boasts a bar with ridiculously cheap pints, music rooms, and social spaces that double as study rooms during exam seasons. They’re both in the middle of the village, making them very accessible all residents.
If you’re planning on bringing your car up, we highly recommend investing in a Category R permit (available on the uni website). Free spaces are available, but are very limited.
Ranmoor
Most Read
Ranmoor on the other hand, has only six halls, with the option of en-suites or studios. It’s about five minutes further down Fulwood Road, up the hill between Shore Lane and Woodhead Way. It’s a much smaller space, but still manages to fit plenty of greenery.

The Ridge is Ranmoor’s significantly smaller social hub. Although it lacks a bar, it does feature music rooms, study rooms, and social spaces.
On the top floor of the Ridge is the Fitness Suite. This space is free for both Ranmoor and Endcliffe residents to use, and has a range of basic fitness equipment, including free weights, treadmills and rowing machines. It is open twenty-four hours a day, all year round, giving residents ultimate flexibility with their workouts.
When you move in, you will recieve a Washpoint Fob. After registering it will be loaded with £42 of credit per semester, which you can use at the washing and drying facilities. These are next to the Edge for Endcliffe, and next to the Ridge in Ranmoor.
In all halls, you’ll share a kitchen with anywhere between six and ten flatmates. The more flatmates you have, the bigger your kitchen will be. Ranmoor kitchens tend to be more spacious, especially in Windgather, making them perfect for pres.
Feature wall colours could be burgundy red, light blue, or grey – but this may vary and change.

- Endcliffe: Stephenson – 42-week contract, shared bathroom, £7,996.80
When is the rent due?
Don’t worry, rent lines up quite perfectly with the student finance drop days. These were the dates in the 25/26 academic year for a 42 week contract:
- When choosing accommodation: £150 deposit
- First Instalment: 01/10/25
- Second Instalment: 21/01/26
- Final Instalment: 22/04/26
Alternatively, it can be paid in full as an annual fee. See the full payment schedule for different contact types here.
Avoid common myths
Its easy to get caught up in reputation. There really is no such thing as a ‘party block’. While it is true that some halls definitely end up having a reputation on campus for being more lively, it is never as much of a drastic difference as you may fear.
Ranmoor isn’t an isle of solitude for the unsociable and boring, the same way that Endcliffe isn’t constant drunk noise.
During freshers week, you can expect almost everywhere to be a bit louder and busier, but after that, people start to settle in.
What really makes the freshers’ experience is the people you surround yourself with. Don’t go in with any preconceived notions about how your flatmates or your experience will be, because you really never know.
If you have any other questions, check out the accommodation portal or get in touch with some current students.
Good luck, fresher!
