A landlord of a York pub was left covered in blood after an incident broke out over the weekend.

Speaking to The York Tab, Tim Kent explained he tried to remove a group of drinkers from The Victoria Hotel and was met with violence in what he described as “an eviction that went south”.

A number of windows were also broken in the “extremely rare incident” which left Tim in hospital for treatment to cuts on his head.

A group of drinkers arrived at the pub on Saturday 21st June, when one man with a cover over his face was said to have been shouting at a group of women.

Tim and his partner, Sarah, attempted to remove the group from the pub’s toilets when they suffered injuries.

Tim explained: “When I went into the loo I was confronted by one but then a second who came out of the stalls with his t-shirt over his head covering his face. Then when the second lad started, there was [a] thirs from a second stall. Things escalated and even lasses came in and started.”

Tim added how he “got them to the outside door eventually”, but “got thumped so did my partner.”

Once the initial group of men were removed, two others came in and began “kicking and punching” Tim, leaving him covered in blood and with a black eye. He later went to hospital for treatment as police encouraged him to go to hospital in an ambulance.

Following being removed from the pub, the group proceeded to throw beer cans at the windows, resulting in eight panes of glass being smashed: “[I] got them out of pub but then they proceeded to throw cans of beer at windows, smashing seven or eight panes. One was over two old regulars, covering them in glass.”

Despite the altercation and police investigation as a result of the incident, Tim opened the business as usual on Sunday, having cleared up the glass from inside the pub.

When asked about the student response to the incident, Tim explained that The Victoria’s karaoke night remained a popular event with students on Sunday night with many students coming to check on him and his recovery.

He also explained how there were three parents staying above the pub for the University of York open day at the time of the incident. Tim told The York Tab: “I had three parents staying with kids here for the uni open day, and assured them that it was a very isolated incident.

“We are very much a student venue and have really gone the extra mile to make it so, yesterday at our karaoke I had a lot of students who havent gone home yet come in and check on me to see if we were okay. Which was really nice.”

Despite the incident, regulars at The Victoria Hotel were keen to support Tim and Sarah, with two drinkers in particular being praised on the pub’s Facebook page for their commitment to a pint.

Sharing photos of the aftermath on Facebook, the pub wrote: “Can we apologise to any patrons in last night who witnessed the incident and a special call out to our two avid regulars Bob and Dave who despite the ruccus and enduring windows being broken above them still managed to finish the Guinness.” Proof that the British will finish their beer no matter the drinking situation.

In the same post, they wrote how the event was “an extremely rare incident for the Vic”, with owners reassuring current and future students that abuse to staff and customers will not be tolerated: “Hopefully this has not put the parents and potential freshers from choosing York University for their studies as it is a great place and lovely city.”
