Apple issues urgent warning to people with iPhones over dangerous habit many still do

It could cause fire and injury

Apple has issued a new warning telling people with an iPhone not to charge their phones on their bed while they are sleeping, because it could cause a fire and injury.

It’s a warning we’ve heard time and time again, but so many iPhone users still do it every single night, unaware of how serious the danger is. Hopefully, Apple’s warning will finally make people take it seriously.

The tech giant has recently updated its “Important safety information for iPhone” page which tells users how to use the device safely.

Under the “prolonged heat exposure” section, it warns users that “sustained contact with warm surfaces for long periods of time may cause discomfort or injury”.

That includes sleeping with your phone underneath your body at night or under your pillow. Even if it is next to you on the bed when you fall asleep, you are likely to roll onto it in the night.

“Use common sense to avoid situations where your skin is in contact with a device, its power adapter, or a wireless charger when it’s operating or connected to a power source for long periods of time,” the warning says.

“For example, don’t sleep on a device, power adapter, or wireless charger, or place them under a blanket, pillow, or your body, when it’s connected to a power source.”

“Keep your iPhone, the power adapter, and any wireless charger in a well-ventilated area when in use or charging. Take special care if you have a physical condition that affects your ability to detect heat against the body.”

They also say that “sleeping or sitting on the charging cable or connector should be avoided”. So, it’s important to make sure that the charging cable isn’t trailing across your bed either.

“Failure to follow these safety instructions could result in fire, electric shock, injury, or damage to iPhone or other property,” Apple warns.
