Air India crash survivor made one important phone call moments after the plane went down
He is the only person who survived
A 40-year-old British national called Vishwashkumar Ramesh is the only Air India crash survivor, and he made an emotional phone call to his dad just moments after the plane went down.
Flight 717 from the city of Ahmedabad to London took off as normal on Thursday morning (12th June) but crashed into a nearby residential area just seconds after taking off. The cause of the crash is still unknown.
There were 242 people on board, all of which are believed to have died apart from Vishwashkumar, who miraculously survived after being put in seat 11A, which was right next to the emergency exit.
His brother Nayan told Sky that their father was on the phone to Vishwashkumar while the plane was on the runway, just before they were about to take off.
“My dad called him and Vishwash said ‘Oh we’re going to take off soon’,” the 27-year-old said. Just two minutes later, the survivor then called his dad again to tell him the plane had crashed and he was still alive.

“He video-called my dad as he crashed and said ‘Oh the plane’s crashed. I don’t know where my brother is. I don’t see any other passengers. I don’t know how I’m alive – how I exited the plane’,” Nayan said.
Their brother Ajay was also on the Boeing 787 Dreamliner, which crashed into an accommodation for medical students, but his body has not been found. Vishwashkumar told the Hindustan Times: “He was travelling with me and I can’t find him anymore. Please help me find him.”

After realising he was alive, the surviving passenger climbed through the broken emergency exit to safety. He said the opposite side of the plane was blocked by a building wall, so nobody could escape that way.
“It all happened so quickly. When I got up, there were bodies all around me. I was scared. I stood up and ran. There were pieces of the plane all around me. Someone grabbed hold of me and put me in an ambulance and brought me to the hospital,” he said.
