We asked and you delivered: Here are some student takes on King Charles in Lancaster

FYI, calling him ‘sausage fingers’ is not a proper answer (you know who you are)

King Charles has recently been on a trip to Lancaster. Therefore, prior to his arrival The Lancaster Tab spoke to students about their feelings towards the visit.

It’s the first time the King has been in Lancaster since 2022, and his first time as monarch. From young to old, many Lancaster residents lined the streets with various patriotic accessories, early awaiting the King’s arrival.

Needless to say, we got some very mixed results. Here are some of your takes:

And the crowd is…. a little confused?

A few of you seemed quite interested by this. One person said that they were “interested to see why he’s visiting”. Someone else asked the same: “Why is he coming here?”

Others wondered about his exact itinerary and timings, which we can only assume were not published for safety reasons.

Tia questioned: “Where, why, when??” And someone else sensibly mentioned the need to know timings, due to exams and road closures. Which is all very valid.

Some students were ambivalent

Quite a few of your answers seemed to lean towards ambivalence, which is an understandable approach. After all, none of us know him personally (presumably, anyway).

One person stated that they “couldn’t really care less”, with another student pointing out that “he’s just a guy”, and using this to argue that there’s no reason to make a “big deal” about the King’s arrival.

Someone else claimed to be “completely and wholly ambivalent” to the visit, and one person asked: “Realistically, who cares?”

Another student said they were “not arsed.” Short and sweet.

Yet another student said they didn’t care because they “don’t really view him” as their King. Which leads to the next point…

Not the most welcome news

Quite a lot of the responses we got were negative, which may reflect a shift in opinion towards the British monarchy, and people’s feelings towards King Charles in particular.

One person said they believed that he “shouldn’t get to have a town basically shut down just for him”. That is very fair, given the likelihood of potentially significant disruptions, at such a vital time for students. In a similar vein, someone else pointed out that “the traffic’ll be crazy”.

One Lancaster student Owen also shared: “The UK should become a republic and abolish the monarchy”. Certainly a strong view, but not one they’re alone in, doubtlessly.

A few others shared this sentiment. Another student Rowan said: “Not my King.” This phrase appears to be popular amongst anti-monarchists. Some people expressed a desire for him to “get out”, asking “can he not?”, and saying they felt “terrible” about it.

Jack eloquently said: “Frick da (sic) monarchy”.

Somebody compared him to “filth”, quite an extreme view to take. Yet somewhat supported by others , as Lucy responded: “Is that why there’s all those traffic warning signs in town? Waste of police time and money.”

Furthermore another person expressed their desire to not be “hyping up such an outdated system”.

Bethany also  responded: “Annoyed cos (sic) it changed the date of our Shakespeare performance!” Alas, a tragedy fitting of the late, great Shakespeare himself.

This visit seems to be inconvenient or wasteful to many. Some people disagreed, though…

Crowd cheers for King Charles III

A few people believed this to be an exciting day. Sophia stated that they “cannot wait” for the royal visit.

Lena said: “He’s coming on the day of my medieval history exam. Kinda iconic.” Very fitting indeed!

Another person said they felt it would bring the community of Lancaster together. Perhaps!

The egg’s on his face?

There were also some jokes, with student Tom saying: “Get the eggs out.” Not something which would not bode well, naturally.

Dale Street United responded: “Thank god he’s finally received my invitation.” Dale Street United Knighthood, when?

Similarly, Coby seemed to hold his support hostage, stating: “Only if he makes me a Lord”.

Josie commented: “Can’t wait to meet sausage fingers x.”

These responses are pretty….interesting, but hold little to no weight.

The Royal Communications Team were contacted for comment, but The Lancaster Tab received no response.
